Congrats to your sailor and you Wendyloo!!

I am here in GL and spent the Thanksgiving weekend with my sailor...We bought the shuttle ticket to leave on the 18th At the Bowling alley...they did not have return shuttle tickets he said when you come back go to the USO and the will get you a shuttle/ticket back to GL as so many sailors will be coming back at different times the entire weekend. The Shuttle is to leave at 5:45 from Corpsman side the sailors will be woke up around 2:30 or 3:00 AM to clean and have room inspection before they leave. Everything in their rooms must be clean and put away in their closets. They were told that they don't have to be in uniform and encouraged to wear "respectful civilian clothes" because they are not traveling to a duty station. I got to go inside the school house...It is a big round circle with NO windows even though class rooms are on the outside of the circle. In the middlle inner circle is where they ceremonial hall where they have HM Graduation. They spend from 6:45 am-4:00 pm in their classroom with and hour for lunch. At this time of year it is dark outside when they go in and getting dark out when they end the day at four.

Wendyloo, thanks for the info! My son is going Tues. to make his plans for for coming home for Christmas. I will tell him to stay away from Spirit airlines. I am also making plans for my other son's PIR in Jan.

Hi ladies. Well my daughter has graduated A-School on Wednesday and is now home on leave. She's having a grand old time reconnecting with friends she hasn't seen for the past 6 months (almost 6 months). This experience has been wonderful and we all can't wait for the next adventure. She'll leave for her duty station before we know it, but for now she's home and I'm loving it. =]

Oh, and here's a little travel advice. Don't book your Sailors on Spirit Airlines. I had heard that all of the other major airlines waive the baggage fees for our Military for their sea bags and garment bags. Not so Spirit. They charged my daughter $200 for all her bags. Of course mom was to blame for sending so much stuff not remembering she'd have to get it all back home, but still . . . A lot of military people (my Marine son-in-law included) have had baggage fees waived on American, US Airways, Delta, etc. I guess Spirit doesn't have Military "Spirit". On top of the $200 fee's they broke her suitcase handle and dropped it on the ground because it reeked of airline fuel and was covered in grease and grime. Needless to say the bag handling is a little like roulette which means, not responsible. Anyway, (sorry to ramble), she's home and that's all that matters, no matter the cost =) I just wanted to get the info out there to all the other moms. God bless to you all and I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Have to share, I am so proud of our sailors.....today, I had on my Navy Mom hoodie I purchased while in GL for PIR and I went to the supermarket. I passed a lady as I was coming out and she stated she liked my shirt. I thanked her and proceeded on my way. she then asked if I had a son or daughter in the Navy and I told her a son. She said to be sure and tell him thank you for serving when I talked to him. Made me feel so proud of all our sailors. Dec 18 is growing closer and we are all excited.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Oh and fare was $79 to NY and $79 back to Chicago

FYI - Southwest has a military rate - sometimes way cheaper than reg fares and you can book up to one day in advance. When you check fares you will see on bottom a military phone number that you call - one time they held for me for 3 days because I was not sure that my son was coming home until last minute.

I just talked to Laurence. He passed test three, and Monday he gets to phase up. He will be able to leave base. He also said he is on duty this weekend.
Happy Thanksgiving. I am thankful to all the families who are "Adopting" our sailors tomorrow!

Welcome Alli. It is very confusing! I know that my son has test three today and will be home on Dec. 18. Other than that, I too get lost ALOT! I do enjoy the daily conversations that we have. I missed not talking while he was on the "Other Side".
mom4sons, I am confused about the uniform thing on the plane. I have heard they should not wear them and thta they are not at the point of A school for civies. I guess, what ever Laurence wears, I'll be happy. I just want to see him again. He is also ready to come home. I didn't realize how long he had been gone until I was reminded he left Aug. 25. When he come home, it will have been almost four months since he was last home with everyone. I am already planning to take hime to all his favorite places to eat that are not available in Great Lakes.
