The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Kathi..that is wonderful news and I am so thankful that we are in the age of technology were are grandparents had to wait days/weeks for letters from our dads overseas. This makes me hopeful I will be able to talk to my sailor when he deploys.

Kathi~ How great to hear from your son and know he is okay. It's also great to know there is an easy way for you to communicate with him as I imagine phone calls are very few and far between. Please send him good wishes from all your fellow Seabee moms!

Jean C ~

That's good to know. Please keep me posted on when you plan to get together. I'm busy with work and grad school but I will definitely try to work it in my schedule if at all possible. I would really like to meet other Seabee moms. I don't know anyone yet - except through this site. It would be great to actually put a face with a name, etc. Please let me know when and where you plan to meet.

Drew is doing a detachment right now too - still no closer to home, but that's okay. Part of the course.

Drewsmom. Actually he is stationed at Anacostia Naval Yard, but he goes thru Bolling to get to his Detachment.
We are in Coventry, and our RI Moms are planning on getting together in Oct. so will keep you posted. We are so tiny here/ that we welcome Moms from Mass and Ct. =)

Congrats to Jean and your son!! It is my dream for my son that he also reaches that level during his career! I can only imagine the amount of pride and how hard it was to keep from busting out!

Congratulations Jean C... I was at my sons A school graduation and put his hat on, which was great for me, very proud. But Chief, awesome. I hope to get there one day. I believe with each accomplishment our sailors achieve we feel more proud than the time before. I know with mine the more he accomplishes the prouder I become.

So once again, Congrats.... :)
