hi pooky,
no he won't be able to come home after BC they go straight from there to Groton, CT. When my Son went up there in september he started school about a week after he got there and he wasn't able to come home in between as they only have a bout a week. But you def. can plan for Christmas :) He will get a few days then for Lee i believe if i remmeber correctly was 9 days, as they go in 2 groups. One group goes over christmas (18th-26) and the second groups goes around (27th-4th).

Hi all. I have been busy, busy, busy and not around. I have been trying to catch up though. Michael is well and settling in to Hawaii. He is sounding really good for a change. PTL!

Change that. Got the letter showing he will be out in around mid-Sept. Thought they had changed BC to 13 weeks, but I guess not

Does anyone know when the next classes start? My son will be out of bootcamp at the end of October. Wondering if he will have any time home before school starts up.

Thanks Kirsten. Actually I did figure out the part about this not having anything to do with being a fireman, but I sure do appreciate the heads up on the leave. I'll be sorry not to be able to bring him home, but that's the military, I know. Thanks for all the info on the school too! Knowledge is power and I feel as if I have at least a little bit now.

Hi sealed.
the FireControl Technician has nothing to do with Fires hun. They are in charge of fireing the Torpedos. I thought it was like a fireman too but has nothing to do with it. He will be in Groton for atleast 11 months for school. He will go through BESS (49 days) ATT (self paced but usually about 4 weeks long) Tchno (same as att) and A school what is 18 weeks long. He won't get leave after BC as they usually leave GL right after or a few days later to go to GRoton. He might be able to get leave in between the classes if there is a holding period :)
Hope that helps

After our son finished BC. He traveled to Groton 5-days later w/o leave. They will know ahead of PIR whether or not they are a grad-n-go or will be on hold for several days. Do not plan on leave in-between PIR and Basic Sub School in Groton. Perhaps after BESS (Basic Enlisted Sub School) he will be able to take some leave, but it depends how long he will be on hold before A-School. Welcome and good luck getting thru BC and PIR!

Hi there. My son was on a boomer out of Bremerton/Bangor sub base which is just west of Seattle. One of his many jobs was being a fireman. Yes they do need firemen on subs....if there is a galley fire or one in the laundrey which he said can and does happen because of the dryer. But they only have so long to get the fire out because of the air in the ship. I was worried when he told me about it at first. The more he told me though the less worried I became. James told me that most fires are out in under 1 minute. The submariners are trained that well !!!!! As for leave after boot camp, that part I think is pretty much true because of when A school starts. My son finished BC right before Christmas and he got to come home for a couple of days around Christmas and then it was back off to Groton.
