Hey ladies,

Joshua graduates from GC A School on Friday. If it hadn't been for NavyForMoms.com I wouldn't have known what to do.

I joined boot camp and was ready as I could be for the dreaded Kid in a box. But luckily I found this website and thanks to alot of other crying Moms I've made it through.

Keep your spirits up and your NavyForMoms Moms close.

Thanks ladies for the trip down memory lane. I do remember the box and the phone call that he made it. It has been 10 years this November and I'm still thrilled and proud at the choice my son made.

Something else to keep in mind is the two phone calls. I don't recall precisely when the first one was, but I vividly recall the fact that I missed it because it was early on the west coast and I was still asleep. (I don't keep a phone in my room.) I was absolutely devastated when I missed that call. I still have the message on my answering machine. The second call was just after battle stations, for which you'll have a good idea when it's coming. I guess my point is, keep your phone with you. :)

The box has all of the stuff they have when they report to BC - even their underwear! I didn't open the box until just before we left for BC graduation so I could get his cell phone for him. He hadn't told me that they recommended he take the battery out of it so I brought him a phone that didn't work and had to mail the battery to him later.
Jim was almost 21 when he left for BC and I was ready to be an empty nester. I did cry after I dropped him off to go to BC but I didn't cry when the box came. I love him so much and miss him terribly. He reminds me that he's all grown up now and is enjoying being responsible for himself. That's what I spent so many years helping him become.
Not all Sailors are so fortunate to have such wonderful moms as you who love them so much. Your sons & daughters are blessed to have you. Hugs to you.

Yes, the Box does go to their home of record.
Joanne, if the spouse does not follow the sailor to school then the only things you are entitled to are medical benefits (check with the recruiter) and the ability to shop at a commissary or exchange. But you must first get a military ID card. If you follow him to sub school then you get housing or an allowance to pay for off base housing.

Is there any help for the married couple when the wife doesn't follow to sub school?
Chayo Comment by Chayo on May 29, 2009 at 5:13pm
Melynda nice to find someone else who will be going through this while I am. I am more anxious than he is. He has already laid out his career path and goals. Look forward to staying in touch. We are from the MS Gulf Coast.
Lyn I'm not really sure but I think he is going non Nuke. I imagine there is quite a big difference in the training and stations. This will be a long ride for all of us. I think I will be the one crying the most.
Now I am getting this correct - the BOX - comes to us with their belongings?

I cried when the first Box arrived. I thought that when my other son went in that I had it all under control. I knew what to expect and when the Box would arrive. I was so sure I'd be fine. Then my second son left and the box arrived. I cried for two days. I just wish N4M was around then.

The Box - I think recruiters should warn parents about the box... I still remember very vividly getting that box 2 1/2 years ago. I cried and cried when I got it and then all over again when I finally opened it a week later.

It does get easier after B/C. Cards and letters are what help them through so send as many as you can. Also ask your son for the names of recruits who don't receive mail and send them cards too. When you go to PIR invite some of the recruits to go with you. You will suprised at how many of them are doing this alone.
