another Eric (grandson) update. thank you for your prayers. i have cried til my eyes are hurting. Nana's right.
Good morning all,
we have the results of Eric's blood work. his white count is still really high. it is lower than it was but still high. the docs have ordered a CT scan to determine if he has an abscess. that is this afternoon. we will let you know how that comes out. if he has an abscess he will have to have more surgery and be here for another 10-14 days with a belly drain and such. if not they may redo the scan in a couple of days to make sure they didn't miss anything. he will drink little bit now but grudgingly. the new antibiotic seems to be making him sick to his stomach. so with the fevers and the vomiting and he still has diarrhea, they are suspecting something to show up on the ct scan. keep praying we are not there yet. love to all

Just my thoughts on the ship board living situation - my son is sharing an apt. with 3 others. The ship yards are not the most pleasant environment from what I can tell. There are expenses involved & at 19 he is not really managing finances that well but before the apt. they were spending money on hotel rooms, cabs, etc. every weekend anyway. When I was there for a visit in May, I must have had 8 sailors come to shower at my hotel!! It's hard for these kids because they are in the shipyards & not "on Base".

Good morning all, Eric Update Girls
Sorry todays update is so late. we has a pretty good day which led to a rough night. they did blood work yesterday and his white count was extreamly high so they gave him new antibiotics, which brought down the fevers and he was able to walk a little. daddy set him up on a good routine of trips to the bathroom and walks down the hall, so after a few trips we thought he would sleep well, but the gas painsand bathroom trips kept him up most of the night. they have slowed down and he is resting finally. he is off the morphine completely now. after his nap we plan to do some more walking and go see his friend tyson that helped him get through the first day. thank you again for all your prayers and help.

love Sarah erics mom
thank you from my heart for the prayers Micki Erics nana

Hi everyone - just got this in todays Navy news & thought I'd share it.

NNS090930-29. USS George H. W. Bush Hosts First Bone Marrow Drive

By Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Brian M. Brooks, USS George H. W. Bush Public Affairs

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (NNS) -- USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), the Navy's newest aircraft carrier, hosted a drive for Sailors to become screened as potential bone marrow donors Sept. 24-28.

A total of 945 Sailors were screened for the national bone marrow registry at the conclusion of the drive, which was the first in the ship's history.

According to Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman (SW/AW/FMF) Patricia L. Harrington, the ship plans on making the bone marrow drive an annual event in order to register new Sailors who will check in over the course of the next year.

"Being registered as a donor is important to me because my father-in-law recently had a liver transplant and without it, he would probably not be with my family today," Culinary Specialist 1st Class Michael Brinkman said after being screened. "I know that being a donor may give someone else that chance to still be with their loved ones."

The registration drive was not an actual donation process, but rather a screening process involving a buccal (cheek) swab. The samples will first be tested for their human leukocyte antigen (HLA) type and after being genetically coded, the information about the member's HLA type is entered into a national database of donors.

USS George H.W. Bush Commanding Officer, Capt. "Chip" Miller, was one of the first crew members to participate in the bone marrow drive, and he described to the crew over the ship's intercom system how satisfying it was to take part.

"It took about 15 minutes, and it felt great to know in that time I put myself in a position to save someone's life," he said.

USS George H.W. Bush crew members and shipyard workers were encouraged to not only register themselves but to take a kit home for anyone in their household between the ages of 18 and 60 years old.

"I took a swab kit home to not only swab my husband and get him registered but for my neighbors as well," Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Amanda Soehren said. "I figured what if the person needing the bone marrow was a loved one or even me? I would want to have the best chance of finding a match."
