Welcome Denise and Jan. The Navy will give them classes on how to get around and communicate. They will be fine.

Hello everyone- my youngest son is new to Atsugi. He is attached to VAQ-136 and, like most new sailors, is trying to get accustomed to this first duty station, his first time overseas and not knowing where he is or how to communicate with the locals. Can you say OVERWHELMED ? LOL! Good to know so many kindred spirits are here to share the journey.

Hi everyone. My daughter will soon be on her way to Japan to join the crew of the George Washington. She is extremely excited about going over there. I am having pangs of not sure what to call it. This is the farthest away from me one of my kids will have ever been.

I'm a Master Cranker.
Claudia Comment by Claudia on September 29, 2009 at 10:02am
I think crank duty can also be laundry or painting or something like that.

Cranking is kitchen duty. Berta is in the middle of her 90 days of cranking. They keep the galley's clean.

Cranking is like kitchen duty, I think. Thanks to all you Moms for being kind and understanding. I'm just trying to make it through. The information here is invaluable, and I don't know what I would do without it. My friends here can't relate, because their kids are with them..

what's cranking?

There is a "GW Ombudsman" in our group here (at least that's her screen name). Maybe they can give you some "off the record" advice.

Just my two cents

I agree, you have to be very careful in contacting the ombudsman. I do not quite understand, but it seems that it can cause more problems for them. From my experience, it was more negative than positive when making those kinds of contacts. I know when Ant was home last year at Christmas, you can decide and do whatever you think is best regarding med and dental things, sometimes that just means paying out of pocket. I remember Ant hated the cranking too. I know I wonder about the confidentiality of the port dates. I have only experienced anticipated dates. Hope it all works out.
