In April 2006, the TORTUGA replaced the USS FORT McHENRY (LSD 43) as a forward deployed naval unit in Sasebo, Japan. The hull swap was part of the Navy's long-range plan to routinely replace older ships assigned to the Navy's Forward Deployed Naval Force with newer or more capable ships. The TORTUGA was previously homeported in Little Creek, Va.

Yes, I believe they are able to have them. My son said they do not have much space for much of anything, but they make do.

Hello all, I was just wondering if anyone has heard of the Rackpacks and if they are allowed to have them on the USS Tortuga? I am trying to come up with ideas for Christmas.

Thanks
Leah

Hello, my name is Leah. My son just called to let us know that he was going to the USS Tortuga. I'm not sure when just yet since he has 3 C schools to get through first. I'm glad to know there is a group for the family members for the Tortuga and look forward to learning about the sailors and their families.

Hi everyone, it seems like everyone is doing well. I know I have been rare, but I have been spending quality time with my sailor before he departed. Yes! He is in Japan now. He left yesterday. The girls and I were so thankful to AA for giving us gate passes to accompany him to the gate and watch his plane depart. It was amazing seeing him begin his future overseas.

While there, we met some other military men, mostly marines. They were headed to many places in Asia as well. Only three sailors ended up with my son in Saesbo.

I was really disheartened, but understood when Mike told me that he was quarantined when he got to Tokyo. He said after they deplaned all the passengers were put into a large room and had to sit on the floor for a long time. They were checking them all out for Swine Flu. Thankfully, Mike didn't get the "X" tagged on him and he was able to connect to his final flight to Fukoka, although he missed his original one. He told me that he even called the quarterdeck when he missed the flight and they arranged another one. I was so very proud of him.

He called me this morning, which was 1:00 am his time and said he arrived safely. He said, "Mommy, I love it. It's beautiful here. The people are so nice." He told me he bought a calling card, but did not know how to use it so he asked for help and he thought it was sweet how friendly and helpful everyone was. I remember the boot camp days when I wondered if he could figure out the calling card to call from 20 miles north... now hes on the other side of the planet!

Just wanted to provide everyone with an update. I am so very proud of our boys and I wish I was young again with today's experience. What an adventure!
