The area is beautiful up there. Plenty of water surrounding the island and good coffee. There is plenty to do on Whidbey and they have a great base. My son owns a house now on the island. When you come viisti you will love it.

Absolutely... Whidbey is in what they call a rain shadow, means they don't get as much rain as other parts of the state. It can be really windy up there though... summer is the best! Warm days, cool nights and lots of beach to walk and explore. Fort Casey and Fort Ebey (WWII era) are fun to explore, with small campgrounds, beaches to explore, old battlements to wander through, big fields to fly kites, trails to hike or ride bikes, a lighthouse to visit and more.
The base offers a movie theatre with first run movies, bowling alley, good sized gym and liberty center. The liberty center offers computers, xbox, pool tables, rooms for music, tours and activities.
What unit is your daughter with??? My son is stationed up there and I visit every other month or so... Always happy to take her to lunch or offer a navy mom hug!

Hi, I just found this group. My son will be heading to Whidbey Island by the end of this month and I'm glad there's already a group here. I'm saddened to hear some moms relatives here are cancer victims. I share your anguish and I couldn't stop my tears. It seems like yesterday when it was about two years ago that my husband passed away after battling the dreadful disease. Technology sometimes is for the strong and young body so I looked for someone to blame.

Who could I blame but the medical around him. I believe his weak body couldn't take it anymore. He could have seen his two sons become sailors and be very proud of them. I'm sorry, I'm just expressing my frustrations. Be back when I'm controlled. I hope you guys understand.

Welcome to the Island Del!!! Indeed cancer is awful... My husband also died of cancer. I know he was cheering from heaven when my son marched through that hall.. I must say that both my sons grew into men that I am and their dad would be so darn proud of. Come and chat anytime... we can send private messages also if you ok my firend request... take care of yourself!

Donnamae, my son and Del El Bor's son will both be heading to Whidbey on the 25th of this month. They both just finished A-school in Texas and are on their two week leave.

My son Ryan is an AT in the VP-40. Missing him already.

Welcome to Whidbey Island! If he is anything like my son, he will love the traveling. My son is currently deployed and will be back sometime between the end of August or September.

Hi, my son from Mississippi will be home tomorrow for his two-week leave then he's off to Whidbey Island as SK.
My first son who's on leave, will be off to Whidbey as MA this Saturday. What a navymom's life! They come and go and we're so happy then sad and then it's like I'm in twilight zone BC. I only got a few days to enjoy both of my sons company and I'm already thinking the effect on me when they leave again. The only thing that comforts me is knowing that they're stationed together, and I thank the navy for that.

Karen, I left a message in your page. I do hope your son and my two sons will be roommates and all from the same state.

Thanks Susan for the welcome and comforting words. I had an emotional start here and it took me awhile to get back on track. Having my first son at home helped a lot and the coming of my second son tomorrow will make my days complete.

Del... know that there are local navy moms here if your sons need anything from a home cooked meal to a ride from the airport to a mom hug! Remember as soon as you say goodbye you get to start counting until you are together again... that is the only way I survived saying goodbye to family all these years when we would visit and then head home.

Even though I am only a two hour drive away from the base and my son... between standing duty and Sunday to Thursday work schedule and keeping up with buddies, he does not make it home much. Sometimes I wish for a long visit... usually we meet halfway for dinner and a visit!

Sad news, I won't be a Whidbey Mom! My son is planning on staying in Lemoore. That's ok with me as long as he's happy. If he gets what he applied for it will be a great career move also.
