Hi April! My son is a boatswain mate on the Enterprise. He was supposed to come home in June for his younger brother's high school graduation but he just recently told me he won't be able to get leave. Sooooo, my youngest son and I are most likely going to go and visit sometime this summer. You'll have to let me know what you discover on your trip - lucky you!

What is his job. Where is he now? ( Norfolk ) if so that is a cool place, my son took me to james town ( loved it ) DON'T GO TO THE AQUARIUM not much to see we waisted $45.00. the Light house is nice ( I have seen better ) but it was fun. YOU WILL HAVE A BLAST!

when your sailor is out to sea EMAIL is your best friend.
send them stuff, their favorite food (canned of course) Zack ( my son ) likes oysters ( yuk ) but I keep him stocked. Its like letters from home only better you get to eat it. Zack called me a few times from the ship, his wife was living with us and he would call her and she would just let me talk she was good that way I know it was hard for her. but they are together now in Japan and they really like it there if you find me on myspace you will see they are both on there Zack and Rachel check out the pictures she takes beautiful pictures.

Hi, April! Thanks for the invite and the compliment. I hope I'm not in the wrong venue being just an aunt and not a mom. If so, please somebody tell me. I'm glad you will get a chance to check on the kids. I know you miss them. We will be trailering the hog down to Florida the 1st week of June and Larry wants to stop by and see Jess & Ben. We miss them too! To my knowledge, not on myspace or facebook. I'll will share some of the candids we took of Ben & Jess soon. BTW -- I retired from State service on March 31st, so I am a free woman!

Hi April- I'm a Columbus Mom too- Welcome aboard! My son is in BC now with a PIR of 4/10 and then he'll be headed for Monteray. We're finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I've just noticed there's another Cathy with a C on this site so it might get a little confusing since there are two of us now.

Welcome to N4Ms and yes there are Columbus Moms out there. We have met as a group a couple times and have had some great fellowship. Will be looking forward to seeing and meeting you at our next get together. My son will be coming home from deployment in a month or so and it's rough but doable. Keep busy and keep up the mail! Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Enlisted
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was concerned or afraid
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
The Navy seems to really care for their/our sailors. Once your child signs up, they are no longer yours. Boot camp to report date was pretty tough. The not knowing whats happening with your child is very hard. Especially for 1st timers. The fear of missing their call or waiting on their call is heart wrenching. So little time on the phone is allowed. Luckily my daughter in law lived with us and would put him on speaker phone. The one bit of advise I can give is - While your child is in boot camp...write them write them write them! Even if they can't write back often or at all. These letters from home is what gets them through. If your son or daughter mentions that other recruits aren't getting any letters, ask them to get their info and rally up some pen pals. Outgoing mail is like once a week, but they get incoming daily. I have not experienced deployment yet and honestly I'm not looking forward to it either. I don't do the not knowing well at all now and I'm sure I won't when he is out to sea.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.
