So sorry I didn't get to meet you all ( did meet Karaqueen - Phil's Mom) at PIR! But I couldn't get to my son quick enough and he was very anxious to spend as much time in the 'real world' as possible. You've all been a big help to me through this a…

This is a very neat letter written by someone who knows what it's like to be in boot camp and was there long enough ago to have a proper perspective. I thought it was really cool and am going to share it with my recruit. http://www.navydads.com/grou

I know, it seems the closer it gets, the HARDER it gets. I would very much like to get together with all of you before PIR. It's just hard not knowing how much time it will take to clear security, where the possible places are to meet, and if there'…

Nice to hear from you. I have a son in CT. We are headed there to visit with him next week. I haven't seen him for 6 months and kind of miss the guy. He got us rooms at the Navy Lodge there in Groton. My son is diver and loves his job. For him, this was a good decision. He has a nice life. I am now waiting for his brother to join, but I think he is going air force. Gotta be proud of these boys.

Hi Barrett's Mom!

Great to see you here! I lost my baby to the Navy a year ago:o(. Very, very difficult time for me, as I was not only dealing with him being so far away, but also being an empty nester. I know exactly what you're going through. I cried alot. Mostly because I was sad about him leaving, but at the same time because I was so completely amazed that my son had decided to join the Navy and because I knew I must have done something right for him to want to do that. I don't know...I just remember there being alot of emotions.

Don't be surprised if you don't hear from him. They rarely get call time. I think Drew called home maybe 3 times during boot camp. The second call home for him was heart wrenching. He cried the entire 45 minute call. I felt so helpless, but he got through it. They learn to lean on their buddies there.

Send letters, send letters, send letters! I can't stress that enough. Try to get everyone you know to send letters too. This is their only communication with the outside world, and for boys who are used to texting nonstop; it's really hard on them. Be prepared for letters from Barrett too. Drew wrote alot about his feelings in his letters home (not typical of him at all) and I cried when I read many of them. I tried to send a card or letter to Drew everyday. In one of his first letters he wrote "I die a little inside each day they don't call my name in mail call". Of course I wrote daily from then on!

Barrett will do fine. You'll be so proud of the man that he will become in the next 8 weeks. The feeling is indescribable. It really is. I can't put into words how proud I am of my Drew.

What is Barrett going to do, does he know yet? Drew is in Power School.
