Thanks Barb, I am proud as hell. He's a great kid, joined up for all of the right reasons and is far more mature than I was at his age.

aw-w-w-w Thanks Sandy. I've adjusted pretty quickly to each phase of his training. The initial shock of bootcamp of course being the worst. Now that he's actually assigned, I guess, I'll get used to Sub life and a year from now I'll be talking the...

Sometimes they can email from the boat. It just depends where they are. Just keep him in prayer and remember, if they could communicate they would. They are the silent service. We're here for you and we will keep you lifted in prayer.

Wow Caroline, I just got this request to accept you as a friend. Clearly I'm not on my N4Ms site enough. Basically, I read the Navy Times website and the Navy News. I am trusting and praying, a lot! I'm so glad to meet another TOLEDO mom. Believe me, there's not very many single guys on the TOLEDO! My son has no car, so he spends his free time on base. Although, he's been working long hours on the boat. I'm glad you're here!

I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate you taking Kevin in as if he was your own. He is looking forward to spending time with you and seeing NY. Please let him know how proud we are of him and how much we love and miss him. Sometimes when it comes from someone else they really seem to get it. He is very excited about their new place and seems real happy when we talk. Enjoy them while they are home...they are both great kids.

Did your son graduate from Power 12/12? What section was he in? My daughter's an EM, section 2.

Funny, my grandfather was from Buffalo and my dad was born and raised (I think) in Erie, PA.

I thought you should know my sons name is Patrick too, and when you said your son wanted to do something noble, I didn't know if you knew that the name PATRICK means NOBLEMAN!!!!!!!!!
Mine certainly is, and I know your son is too.

Caroline,
Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. I'm disecting this long informative letter of yours......to provide you with my best knowledge/advice.
I guess if you understand my perspective.......you could take that perspective and apply it to your son.

Here's my perspective. After retiring from the Navy, I went to work at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. I worked West Campus and specifically worked for the Denver Bronco's.....as this was their training camp.

Okay between you and I...........I've seen thousands of young people on the College Campus whom I can earnestly say........that I've no earthly idea why they were there other than possibly the sex, booze or Rock and Roll. It has long been my opinion that military service should become an extension of education. Those fortunate enough to be able to go on to further studies....should serve in the Military for a couple years after attaining their BA, BS or whatever.

Those choosing not to go to College should serve a couple years upon graduation from High School. No exceptions!!

This plan could help with scholarship money for those continuing their education and could help those going into the military later when they complete their enlistments.

This idea I think would solve many problems on the campuses and in the Navy.

I think your son knows what he needs. He has chosen discipline at this point in his life.........he has chosen structure..........as what he needs. My belief is that he is probably very right in his choices. Would heading straight to college be what he needs or would it be what you need him to do??

As you know......it's a child's job to establish their independence.......it's really the only job they have. I salute you, your sailor........and the other sailors he is serving with..............you will soon see...........he made the right decision for him........and most likely for you.

Looking forward to your response.

Hah!!! I am laughing as I type this, because I am CLUELESS what to send my son also! He is not into sweets, has not let me know what he cannot get over there, I have begged him for ideas, all to no avail! I think the idea of cards from your class seems very sweet. If you add me as friend, I can PM you with his address and the name of his unit...I don't know how he will react, but I think it is a nice thought! Yeah, I just smile and nod when my friends say things like "I know how you feel. When I dropped my son off at college...blah, blah, blah" I am always gracious to them as I know they are missing their babies, but, inside I am thinking "Is your son getting bombs lobbed at him? Is he not able to call on major holidays? Is he able to come home if he gets homesick? Is he letting you know that he is constantly sick due to the toxic smoke he is breathing nightly defending the base against attack?" Sorry...one of my pet peeves when they compare. You get it! That's what I love about this site...moms that know, with the heart as well as the head! Again, is prototype school C school? Do you know where that will be? I'm happy for you that your son will be home for Christmas. Treasure every single moment...I know I do when Geoff is here. Even if he is just lounging on his bed playing video games, it is enough to know that he is here. You get it, I'm sure!
