We learned the hard way about the dealy in mail. Our grandson's fiancee received her first letters this past Sunday! He has been gone since the 19th of August. Needless to say her mail had not gotten to him yet and he was really upset. Things better…

We got our letter today, well our grandson's fiance' got it. Either way we now have our grandson's PIR date. He is on Ship 13 Division 359 with a PIR of October 16. I just hate how they are limited on the number of guests. We are a large extended fa…

Being a newbie I love this idea. I certainly would not want to cause our recruit any problems. I just may have to try it.

Hello Laurie, I just got the news of our grandson's ship/division. He arrived on the 20th from SC where he was for the last 6 months. Prior to that he was a lifelong, 17 1/2 year resident of the MS gulf coast where we still reside. He wrote to his f…

First off thanks to everyone who gave me the most recent information. I have one more question how were most of you able to get ship and division numbers already? Our grandson arrived on the 20th having left the 18th for GL.

Thanks for the info Molly. I wonder if our grandson will be in the same division as yours or Donna's son's. Our grandson's name is Jacob. I don't know what if anything Jacob will disclose just hope whatever it may be it is not something to get him r…

Molly, It is in the "new" bootcamp video on youtube. I thought it would be something like that. The scene they show is all the recruits in one room and officer telling them to "stand up" and admit to what ever the issue is he is speaking on at that…

Thanks Molly for all your advice. I would love to stay in contact over the next few months. Our grandson arrived in Great Lakes yesterday. He called his fiance' so I'm glad it wasn't to us because I don't know how well I would have handled it. Can y…

No questions yet. Sure many will start coming up as time goes by. I do have one though do they get to make at least one phone call on arrival at BC to let family know they made there in one piece?

Our grandson left Tuesday, 18th, headed for BC. Had an overnight stay in SC and was headed out yesterday, but, storms delayed his departure until early this morning. He didn't take his cell but has managed to stay in touch with his fiance' who is ke…

How do they pay for the uniforms? They won't be going up with any money so does it come straight out of pay while in BC?

Profile Information

About me:
I am a psychology graduate working as intake delinquent counselor at the county youth court facility in our city after spending 20 years with our local law enforcement. We have a total of 5 children, 8 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild. Our oldest grandchild graduates from high school next month and leaves for bootcamp August 15 in Groton, CT. Tht]at is a long way from our home on the MS Gulf Coast. My husband and I have raised him since he was in the 4th grade several years after his father, my son, died at an early age. I'm anxious about this new road our grandson will be undertaking and hope that we have him prepared as much as possible. Womeone raised the issue of cell phones. Are they allowed to carry their cell phones since there is not much else that he can take?
I am looking to attain much of my information on the process he will undergo through your help and was glad to find it.
I am here to support or represent my:
Grandchild
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Waiting to leave for Boot Camp
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Needed to learn more about it
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

Hi Chayo, I was catching up on the DEPper comments over the past month and one of yours caught my eye. (I have a young friend whose hubby has been gone for 6 months of training and she has a 14 month old. It's hard, but doable, with LOTS of support!) Your grandson is so young to have so much responsibility at home. But he made those grown up choices and he is apparently trying to make more before he goes.

Just learn as much as you can here on site, encourage his GF to become a member too, there are quite a few Wives/GFs/Fiances and Groups just for them. She'll make great friends who'll really "get it", friends she'll need and rely on in the near and far future. It takes a special type of girl to stand by her Sailor, their encouragement and experiences will help.

Read all the DEPper "need to know" type discussions, click "view all, there's lots more than what shows. Print out and start a small file of things you think might be important for him to know and highlight things to take care of. Let him know you are there if and when he feels like talking, but don't push or nag. Tell him how proud you are and that you believe he can do all this and keep telling him, in every phone call and letter. He will soon need (and appreciate you) more than he knows now. On the practical side, be sure someone at home has power of atty over his finances and in case of emergency.

DO send a cell phone with him on his way to BC. They will take it away, but not before he's been able to call and check in along the way with you, GF and baby girl. You will all have peace of mind, esp since you are going to be farther apart, sooner than most. Some Moms/GFs never get that "I'm here" call, those that take their phones will, even if the pay phones lines are long.

One last suggestion to him, since toddlers change and grow so fast... put his picture in a plastic (wipeable, non breakable) frame that is hers, make a few video recordings, especially of him reading his daughter's favorite book(s) or singing to her her favorite lullaby. You can even go to a Build a Bear store and make a special teddy-with Daddy's voice recorded- to hug each night until he's home. It will be a special comfort to her when he comes home on leave and has to go again. Sorry for the long post to your page, but I hope these suggestions help you all to prepare. Let me now if you have any further questions or need to chat Hang in there. You don't have long to go! Who knows, one day, he may find himself- with his little family-on a sub based out of WA State. If so, I've got you covered! LOL God Bless. :-)
