Hi Cheryl, you don't know me, but I was just catching up on the DEPpers Group and caught your post about Josh being ready to leave, early if possible. I take it you are still waiting for an opening? What is his original ship out date?

I understand how you are feeling. My son quit work last year in anticipation of a late June ship out. Then, there was a delay and they kept projecting his departure out to later in the summer. Long story short, he grew impatient. He had physically prepared and mentally psyched himself up to go. He went in to talk to his Recruiter about his situation and options. I got the call, that he had changed his Rate and would be leaving even sooner than his original ship date...in a week! That was an unexpected shock!

My advise to you -as you try to go on with daily life with this 'maybe' hanging over your head and calendar- is to just take things a day at a time, try not to worry (tho your anxiety is perfectly normal), don't make firm plans in pen and get things in order sooner than later. Get a power of atty., make sure you can have access to his account, pack up what he doesn't absolutely need now and have him prepare a box of things he would like you to bring for him on PIR weekend and a box of clothing he'll want a bit later at "A" school.

I say all this because my son was not living at home at the time and we scrambled to pack him up, move him out of his apartment and find a storage unit and get the pwr. of atty, all while trying to enjoy some special time with him in those last few days!! Then, when he needed his things mailed to "A" school, I had to dig through many hastily stuffed white garbage bags in the storage unit-in 95 degree heat- to find when he wanted, hoping I had it right, 5 different times! UGH.

Even if your son is at home, it will make life easier for you at home while he's away (and to mail things) if he helps you do these things now. Then you can relax and just be together. (Kind of like having your bags packed and things checked off the to do list before you head off to the hospital to have your first baby. Never quite know when labor will start, but it sure helps to be prepared. LOL) Sorry about the looong post here, don't know if this helps you, but thought I'd share and remind you that you are definitely NOT alone in this journey! God Bless. Hang in there. :-)

Was concerned or afraid
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
That he feels this is the right decision for him and not just a way to get out of our small little town. He truly wants to help people and make something of himself and his future.
