I read about being laid off in "Navy Times" The poor economy has hit every one. Sailors are going to really have to step it up if they want to stay in. I'm not sure which rates are affected more. Sorry to hear about your son.

he's only 17. let him work for a couple of years and think about it. forcing him to join is wrong. if he hates it you will all feel worse. my son was 20 when he went in. that's not too old! :)

I see "hurry up and wait" has already been used. And my advice was going to be to get used to it! When dealing with any part of the federal gov't I might add. My son had to wait to start A school for a few weeks after he got to Pensacola and wait fo…

Christine, I'm not going to lie, there are more sailors deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, Cuba and Africa than there are onboard Naval ships throughout the world. Don't let that scare you though. We aren't kicking down doors, or doing front line combat…

Hi Dolores, my son has told us more than once "I am so glad I did this". I am very proud of him. He has adapted well to Navy life and he loves the traveling and meeting new people. He has only been in 9 months but it seems longer. We have all adjust…

Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?

When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was concerned or afraid, Needed to learn more about it, Said “No way!”
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
That this is something my son is very excited about and the best thing I can do is suppport him. I have also learned that the Navy has a lot to offer him if he chooses to take advantage of opportunities
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
The Navy has a lot to offer

Glad to hear things worked out well. We did watch "Speed and Angels"...and it scared me to death! Will try to find the one you recommend as well. Thanks.

Hi Christine, I'm from Quincy, IL by the Mississippi River. We are all scared are child will have to go over there. My step-daughter goes to BC in January 2010, I'm already worrying about that and she is not even in BC yet. She is a strong women and I know in my heart she will be alright. hi christine, sounds like were much alike. You know, i kinda felt the same way when my jake wanted to join the military. Its scary thinking about your child going into harms way. Jake has always lived on the edge a bit anyway, he would have joined whether we wanted him to or not. Actually, joining the navy seemed much safer a bet than the marines(he wanted to join) he can learn more than to just shoot a gun, i felt. I tell you, i actually felt better knowing he'd have rules and guidance that he wouldn't get in college. it's a fine line, glad you feel better now.
you take care and have good thoughts, good luck to your boy, hope everything works out for all of you, have a great night!!!

hello christine, i actually picked that picture for 3 reasons. i looove cats, think i was one in another life. ha! our first cat looked like that, houdini, she was a hellion, and these cold MT winters make me just want to curl up into a blanket on the couch and hibernate!!
how are you feeling about the "navy thing" now? have you come to better terms? i'll tell you, for the longest time my Jake was saying he wanted to be a marine. It scared the heck out of me, they train them to go to war(as far as i saw it) i'm muuuch happier with his choice of the Navy. yes, he could get into some dangerous situations out there but he's a big boy and i can't tell him what to do as a career. i just hope and pray he stays safe, i have to think that way, i'm a worry wart on a good day. hope to talk to ya soon, take care!

Hi Christine,
Thanks for the compliment on our family photo. We thought it was fun. It's this year's Christmas Card photo since our son left for Japan in August we knew he wouldn't be here at Christmas. It sounds like you have lots of navy experience. That should be very helpful in supporting your son's decision to enlist.
Take care,
Coyote

Hi Christine, Here's a poem someone sent me. Hope you enjoy like I did Patricia

Recruit to a Sailor
I kissed and hugged her and watched her walk away
She graduated boot camp and was now on her way
She stood tall and so proud as she walked and she waved
I could'nt be happier of the road she has paved
The weekend was short how I wished for more days
Just in awe of her presence and new Navy ways
Her focus and maturity came quick in nine weeks
I know she willfind whateve she seeks
I am back to waiting for calls and the mail
Never knowing when the time comes for her to set sail.
I will continue to wait for that next hug and next kiss
Not doing it daily is what I will miss
My daughter is a woman now I need to let go
I don't know if I can I just love her so
I am proud of my daughter and her accomplishments to date
as hard as it is I will continue to wait
I will wait for the hugs and wait for the kiss
I will continue to pray and continue to miss
Please take care of her God on her journey so new
It makes it easier for me knowing she has You.

Hope you all enjoy. Patricia
