Was concerned or afraid
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
Be patient, encouraging, and always let them know how proud you are of them and those they serve with. Take advantage of the wealth of information and support on sites like this. You're never alone!
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:

Hi Chrystal,
I meant to write you back sooner. I think it would be great to meet you guys while we're there, along with the others. I'm just not sure what my guys will want to do that afternoon when we first get there. We have our 17yr old son coming with us. He and his Dad my want to hit some balls if they have a driving range but I can't make any promises on that. I personally was kind of wanting to check out Chicago, but I'm the minority. We might go to Six Flags on Saturday. I thought that might be something fun for everyone. Have you guys considered that? All I know for sure is, Ill do whatever my big boy wants to do! I can't wait to get a big fat hug! I SO hope your son has gotten one of your letters by now. That made me sick to read that he hadn't. I know how much I personally count on getting a letter from my son. I can only imagine how those boys must look forward to getting mail from home. Have you got a phone call yet? I'm still hoping my son will call again, when I'm home, so I can hear his voice. Have a good weekend! How's the weather in California?

Chrystal,
There are just a few places to stay in Plvl. There is the historic Cary House right downtown on Main St. You could just walk up the street to the courthouse. Several places to eat and shop all within walking distance.
If you want the B & B thing, there is the Shafsky House which is still downtown but on the other side of the freeway. Only about a 2 min hop to Main St. Other than that, you would have to stay at the Placerville Best Western which isn't right downtown but more of a regular hotel.
Websites are: caryhouse.com
shafsky.com
Hope this helps some.

Chrystal,
Did you get my message I sent you Saturday? For some reason I don't think it went through, but I wrote you back after your message to me on the 4th. I might have sent it to the wrong person or place, knowing me. Anyway, we made resevations at the Navy Lodge too. We're flying into Chicago Thursday the 7th at 1:30. I sure hope the date for PIR doesn't change. We're even more excieted now that we have our reservations in place.

Chrystal,
I went ahead and made our reservations at the Navy Lodge, too. Still haven't booked a flight yet, looking into that now. I was hoping to hear from my son (a call) so I could see how sure he was about the date. I know it's pretty definite but they do tell you to get a "refundable ticket" and I don't see where that is really a choice. We've been on-line getting prices. Anyway, I can't wait to go and see him in all his glory. We're so excieted for him, he sounds like he's really doing well from his letters. He made "APO" (athletic petty officer) now since he's been doing so well in the physical part of it. He sounded pretty proud of that. He also was saying that he couldn't believe how many guys didn't know how to swim. He said he went to church Sunday but had to walk 1.5 miles each way. Said it was worth it just to get away from the barraks. How's your son doing? I know you can't wait to see him as well. Talk to you soon.

Not sure about A school, I thought it was gonna be at GL, but in his letter I got 2 days ago, he after grad he would be at GL for 2 weeks, but didn't say where to after that. He did say he was hoping for San Diego, so maybe his A school will be there, I'm not sure at this point. Either one is good for me, I grew up in Chicago my whole life, I lived about 40 minutes or so south of GL and have family there so at either place he will be close to family :-) but San Diego would be tghe best LOL...how bout your son?

Hi Chrystal,
Have you made reservations yet? I know you have a little more knowledege about places than most of us with your travel agency thing. You know your son and mine are both in the same division and ship. They probably know each other. I want to make a decision by this weekend, so let me hear from you. Have a great 4th of July weekend!

Hi there,
Yep, it was hard to send Eric off to boot camp, but I actually did pretty well, if I do say so myself! Everything just happened so fast that they don't leave much time for a long, painful goodbye. The hard part came when I received the short "I'm here" call, which came at 11:30pm my time. He sounded so tired and when I asked how it was going, he said he already hated it! My heart dropped because he was so excited about it that morning and now everything was different. NOW the tears came flooding in because I just felt so bad for him. I did realize they all go through this and it will change, but I just couldn't get over how sad he sounded. Well, I'm sure that after a little bit of sleep (I hope he got some sleep), things looked better to him.
My son-in-law is stationed in Virginia and thought it was funny because he remembered what it was like and felt sorry for him too. Guess he forgot to mention a few things when Eric was asking for advice! lol
Hope all is well with you and that you have a nice 4th. Ours will be quiet as fireworks are illegal in this county and this is our very first holiday ever without both of our kids. hum...................
