As a mom who is remarried, I don't feel that using my last name is a threat to my Sailor. I do hope you can sort us out by area at some time. Since I'm pretty new at this, a question: are families also members of Navy Leagues? I just returned from m…

Nicole, my son enlisted at 32. He was in pretty good shape, but stayed close to a pool for 5 mos. before boot camp. Now my nephew is leaving April ? and he's working out but not swimming. I think he should do so.

Wow, sorry to take this long to acknowledge your message!! But, my sailor is home, so we're busy doing stuff with him... and before that, I was busy getting ready for his visit!

Please don't sweat missing the get-together. Granted, we had a great time, but we'll have more in the future. In fact, "Navy Dad Mark" thinks he might put something together in Valparaiso before summer. Forgive me not knowing where Anderson is (I'm still a newbie), but if you need a ride there, I'm sure we could find one for ya'!

It's late, so gotta run... Hugs! k.

Cindy,
We are having an Indiana gathering in Indianapolis on the 14th of March. You can join the Indiana group by going to the Groups tab at the top of your page. Then type Indiana into the search block below the featured groups. For add'l information on the gathering...go to the right of your screen and find a calendar called Events...go to next month and click on the 14th of March. Hope to meet you there.

Sorry hun I don't know much about that but if you look up on the internet the ship he is on, they may have a home page. Just type in the whole name of the ship . My sons ship has a web page. it is so neat they take pics on the ship and they keep you updated on information. At least to the best that they can . I asked my son the other day where he was but he was not allowed to tell it was private. Another thing is sometime you can chat with your son or daughter on the email, that is if they are sending you mail at the same time. I have done it a couple of times with mine. Get back with me if I can help. Huggs Cindy

Cindy...these were the two ladies I thought would be most helpful. I have never experienced commissioning, so I knew I didn't have the answers. Hope these responses can at least get you started on answers to your questions.

Pat asked me if I could answer your questions above, however, we've never experienced a commissioning situation... so I have no answers.

BUT, if I were you, I'd find a newly commissioned ship mom (try the NEW ORLEANS or the FREEDOM) by using the Search box at the top of the page, and see if she knows. I imagine it depends on whether the boat/ship has reached its home port or not (they frequently are NOT commissioned in their home port, but travel there after the ceremony). Hope that helps some.

I repeat the invitation Pat extended, to join us at Indiana Moms! We're in the planning stages of a Meet 'N Greet, probably in Indianapolis. Any ideas? k.

I do know that there are some moms here that their sons just had the commissioning of the USS NH. you may want to go to the group there to see what they have to say.

I do know from the commissioning of the USS NH that we had here in NH a few months ago that..... they were in port for a bit prior to the ceremony they were out to sea trials before the boat was commissioned and it had come up from Groton CT. It did not leave that day to go out to sea but if you contact the Obudsman for the ship they could (I am sure) help with how long the boat will be in port and your sailor should know if he will have duty etc when you are there.

Check with Meg Higginbotom here on the site she is an obudsman and can help you search for the obudamsn for this ship. If you can not locate her let me know I will help you find her.

God BLess

I did post on your blog too :) thanks Pat for searching me out

Cindy,
I am new enough to the Navy that I don't have an answer for you. I did sent Karen, (see message below) a note asking for assistance with your Blog question (above). She has three sons in the Navy...and more experience and information available to her than I do. She is a busy lady, but hopefully she will come through with additional info for you, soon. Sorry.

Was proud and encouraged it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
The military owns your kid --just go along for the ride and enjoy!
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.
Out of the blue! a note came from the USS Stockdale yesterday! She will be in port 4 days before Commissioning, and leave for San Diego 2 days after. They have planned tours and such for family and guests the days before. I am hussleing to get reservations. Thanks to all for the networking. I'm not good at this "thread" thing yet, but let me know when Indiana Moms are meeting, and I'll be there. cindy

about Reid

Reid's enlistment date was Jan. 2005 as a submariner. Unfortunately he voluntarily took the language battery after he agreed to go to sub school. He ultimately wants to go to DLIFLC in Monterey and study Chinese. After 18 mos. in Hawaii he is now with a new destroyer headed to San Diego.
I left a question somewhere on the site about a new Ship's Commissioning. Has anyone had experience with a Commissioning? How long does the ship stay in Port Hueneme, CA before it leaves for it's home port? We'r… Continue
