When I heard “Navy,” I:
Needed to learn more about it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
to be patient. The Navy doesn't work on "mom time".
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

Roller Coaster Ride

Well, my son has been home for 30 days on convalesent leave after surgery. It has been so nice having him home for so long, feels like old times. Now he is headed back for six months of rehab and administrative duty, then probably reclassify again because of the injury/surgery. On the good side, he is only 3 hours away. On the bad side, he has been in a year and has spent most of it on hold or med hold. Not exactly what he was looking for, but he has a great attitude and is taking everything in… Continue

New Direction as HT

Well, Wednesday was reclass day and his top six picks were not available. He decided on being a HT. Got some basic information, but ultimately have no clue what he will be doing. I found the group on this website and joined.

He wanted something that was hands on, they kept pushing him to desk jobs and he was pretty adament about staying active. The next stage of the journey begins!

Reclassify

My son is finally ready to reclassify. After lots of physical therapy and rehabilitation, his shoulder just isn't strong enough to swim. He can everything but swim with it. He really has come to terms with it and is eagerly awaiting reclassification. He "med-upped" last week and has an appointment to reclass on Wednesday morning. He is spending a lot of time exploring new options and is putting lists of jobs that interest him. Let's keep our fingers crossed that some of these are on the list nex… Continue

Medically Disqualified

Today is a very sad day, my son just got medically disqualifed as a rescue swimmer in A school due to a rotator cuff issue. About a month ago he sprained it, not quite torn but pretty bad. They have tried physical therapy, medical intervention and nothing has helped. He has been down for 30 days, so they medically disqualified him. Even though he knew it was potentially coming, it still is hitting him harder than he expected. Basically his Navy career is up in th air. In January when he returns… Continue

Reclassifying

Wondering if anyone could help or point me in the right direction, please? My son is in Air Crew Rescue training and has injured his rotator cuff. Following rehab, he saw the doctor today who said that his shoulder is not good and he will not medically qualify. What is his next step in reclassifing to a different job, what is the timeline, and whom should he speak to? He is a bit "down" so I thought I would ask around and see what I might be able to find out. I did also post this on a recruiter'… Continue

Cyndy ~ I am so sorry to hear Alex is going to have to have surgery again. I hope it works this time and he is able to use his shoulder again. Keep me posted on the surgery and his recovery please. Let's try to get together this year during the holidays. I know its a busy time, but I would love to connect with you and meet your family. I'll let you know when Trey is coming home and maybe we can schedule something. Let me know what you think.

This was the first time the ship has been out since last fall due to being in for maintenance and upgrades. Since he Trey spent the whole time in the medical ward of the ship sick along with getting sea sick, he doesn't really know what it is like on the ship. They sure put in a lot of long hours and work really hard getting the ship ready. He seems to like it better than he did in Chicago.

What is Alex studying online? Does he have a degree he is going for? Trey is starting some online course as well. He is going for Electrical Engineering.

Cyndy ~ It's great hearing from you. No, Trey wasn't able to make it home. His ship went underway the week before Thanksgiving and he was in the medical ICU when it left. They were gone a week, and when they got back he went to the Naval hospital. They were finally able to figure out what was wrong with him and he is feel a lot better now. He will be home for the Christmas or New Year holiday. I am really looking forward to seeing him.

I'm glad Alex was able to come home for short time and you guys were able to finish the holiday out back with him. How is he doing? Is his shoulder healing okay? Is he retraining or will it be a while yet?

Looking forward to hearing from you soon,

Sindy

Hi Cyndy ~ It is amazing what a differance a year makes and how many changes the guys have been though in one year. I'm gald to hear all is well and Alex is healing nicely. I'm glad he is so close and is able to come home more often. I miss not being able to see Trey on those short visits from GL. He is actually doing really well and really likes it. They are working longer hours and 6 days a week now. I'm not sure I told you the ship he is on, but in case I didn't .. it is the USS Kearsagre LHD-3. He should be getting his own little appartment in a couple of weeks and is looking forward to having his own place.

I know we have talked about this for a year now, but we should really try to get together :).

It's always good to hear from you :) Sindy

Cyndy ~ It will be great if he is able to come home once a month. It was wonderful for Trey to be able to come so often. I will really miss that. I'm Alex has a close group of friends. I have been looking into flights to VA already, and to my surprise they are still a little pricey, but I am hoping to get over there once for for he deployes and for sure when he comes back. Thank you for being on here! I am glad our guys had something in comon and knew each other. :) Take care, Sindy

I hope his recovery goes well. I hope he is able to find something he will enjoy. I know this has been a long journey and am hoping for the best. Will he be able to come home on weekends when he can?

I'm glad you were able to meet him. He didn't tell me that he had met you. He is so hyper focused on his girlfriend when he is here and shares a lot with her, but when he is home he doesn't like to tell me much. I think he will be there until his term is up, but I'm not sure at this point.

It was very spoiling having him so close and to be able to come home on weekends and I'm sure it will be an adjustment again.

Will Alex be able to reclass for something he wants this time?

Hi Cyndy ~ Its been to long since I've been on here and we've been in touch. I'm glad to hear Alex is recovering well and you had a wonderful visit with him. Trey has been home for the past couple of weeks before he heads out for his station duty at Norfolk, VA. He just left and I am really feeling it today. I know he isn't going to be just a weekend away any more and will miss him greatly. He has been assigned to the USS Kearsarge and is excited to get started with this new phase. His back is still giving him a great deal of trouble, but he won't say anything. I hope things are going well for you and your family. I think of you often and hope someday we will be able to get together. Take care, Sindy

I know what you mean. Trey was here over the weekend and should be back in GL shortly himself. He has been waiting for Alex and was going to try to room with him. I agree, it will be good for them to be together. I am like you, with him being closer it is so much easier having him coming and going. He really surprised me Friday when he came in. I was thinking him might come in, but not till later. I was heading out the door to have dinner with a friend and he greated me at the front door. Had a wonderful weekend. I am looking forward to sometime soon of being able to connect and meet you and your family. Sindy
