Hi Linda E. My son Derek was active SeaBee at Port Hueneme for 4yrs. It's a beautiful area near the base. He is now a reservist, NMCB15. As far as Guantanamo Bay, the only thing I have heard lately, is that they are thinking of closing it down, so i…

Karen, I am so sorry to hear about your son. I guess we all know that there is a chance, of it going the way it has with your son, the things that they have to deal with, and experience in the sand-box. My heart goes out to you and your family. I wi…

HOOYAH HOOYAH Enjoy every minute with your sailor, and you are sooo right about sending away a "kid" and have an independent, self suffencient adult return. Doesn't it just make your heart swell, with so much pride?? Please thank your sailor for his…

You know moms, it may be one of the hardest things (letting go of our sailors), but as I have found after 4 yrs of my son in active service, and supporting him in every way possible, I now have the most independent, caring, self-suffencient, wonderf…

Hi marsbars232, My son was at the game also, (but he goes to all the home games, now that he's in the reserves). He said that he got goose bumps when the helicopters flew over. What a shame it wasn't a better game huh?? Is your husband home on leave…

Hi Karen, So is your son a SeaBee? He looks the part in the pic. I don't know about that credit card thing??? I've never heard of such a thing, but if that keeps him out of harms way, how bad can it be? My son has done the Iraq thing as well. For so…

Hi Melissa, Boy can I relate to how nice it is to have your son near you. Mine has been stationed in Florida, Miss., and CA (never over-seas like yours). But now, as a reservist, he lives here, reports to Belton 1 wk-end a month. So I get to be with…

Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Enlisted
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud and encouraged it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
That it was okay, to not be in his life every minute. That he was growing everyday, becoming the wonderful young man that he is today.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

Hi Debbie, my son is a construction mechanic. He didn't tell me a lot about what he did, except to say he repaired vehicles, sometimes on base and sometimes in the field. He also told me he wasn't in a dangerous situation (like a mom believes that). He was stationed on a base the entire time. One thing he did tell me about that he really enjoyed was going out on convoy and throwing stuffed toys to the Iraqi kids on the roads.

Debbie - Dan was lucky, he went reserves in 2000 and wasn't seployed until 2005! Then it was to Kuwait. His Dubai det was a 'voluntary' deployment. He is talking about taking a det to Bahrain in January, his employeer is pro-military, his father and grandfather were Seabees so he has a soft spot!

Debbie - my Seabee son did 5 years active and after about 6 months out joined the reserves for more money for college. 10 years later he is still a Reservist, just returned from 6 months in Dubai.
Pluses, he earned 8 times his annual salary (from his regular job) in 6 months. Drawback - advancement is painfully slow, 15 year he is still just a Petty Officer 1st, hopes to make chief soon, advancement rules in reserves made it difficult, he was PNA so many times it was discouraging. New advancement rules make him more optomistic.
Negative - potential employers are all enthused about him until he reveals his reserve status them pfft! He has TONS of expereince, adn he would make any company a great employee, he works like a bull, he is so ethical, he had so much construction experience, but...even with a college degree he is working at a non-degree related job. I am urging him to go to OCS. Maybe he says...
Tell your son, if this is what he likes, hang in there. Dan is glad he has, he is even talking about his next det.
