Thank you so much for the input. Yeah, to stay in HI would be good, as he just rented a house w/three other nukes at (to me) an exhorbitant cost! And he is such a "techy", he enjoys the new stuff. He sounded excited just talking about the digital's.…

It definitely does NOT reflect poorly on you to have a split tour, it is quite common on submarines. It sounds like he has a shot to go to the USS Hawaii, the first Virginia class submarine in the Pacific fleet. From what I understand, it is a revol…

I know you asked Mark, but maybe I can help a little. If he is moving because the Navy needs a volunteer and they are offering it to him, then it is good for his career. It will be noted in his record (or fit rep) that he took the extra yr of duty a…

Hi Dinah-
My Son Nick is on the LaJolla- He Loves the guys on the boat, but wanted to see more - he is currently on a IA and is going to Africa. He wants to see it all. Makes me very nervous but he is a grown man and I need to let him make those choices....doesn't mean I have to like them. But I will support whatever choices he makes and be here to listen and tell him how PROUD of him I am.

Hello again! "I.A." stands for "Individual Augmentee." This assignment is a voluntary one (I think) that takes a sailor away from his normal duty station and he is deployed to a "hot zone" somewhere. His presence there will free someone (probably Army or Marines) from being in a support role to a more forward position. Your son will not be going to Africa, just the sailor who has volunteered for the IA assignment.

The incentives for volunteering for an IA assigment include money and promotion. Also, it's only for a year, then the sailor returns to his Naval job. Hope that helps! k.
