From what I understand is they do not get any benefits if they have not graduated from bootcamp. The graduation is when they turn from recruits to sailors. And they have to be in longer than 6 months for other benefits. Go to search and type in "ask…

My son was discharged after 9 months for an injury and complications from surgery. After they graduate from bootcamp, they are considered sailors. My son did get an honorable discharge. He also has GI bill education benefits, but for some reason he…

Dear, Earlene
This is hard on you as well as him. You have such pride being able to tell
family, friends and so on my son is in the Navy and know you have to say
he has been discharged. He has been medically discharged it is nothing to
be ashamed of. As I said he gave it his all. I still have one son in the Navy.
Both my boys signed up together that was difficult. One point I tried to make
was he had the perferated ear drum when he joined and was accepted. But
then later let go it just didn't seem fair. But you know what he is now doing
what he has wanted to do since he was 6 years old and what he planned to
do when he got out of the Navy. You know they say all things happen for
a reason. Just love him and support him to the fullest and don't let him blame
himself. I don't know this may have been something he wanted to do all his
life. But trust me there is a great life and world after the Navy. And I can tell
you it is a great life in the Navy because my other son that is still in is doing
wonderful. It is just hard on me because he is so far away. Keep faith and
God Bless you and I will keep you in my prayers. I can be here for you if
you need an ear.

Hey Erlene, My son was in a similar position I think. He made it through boot camp and into A school. He developed a nervous habit of chewing on his knuckles and they were going to discharge him on the grounds that he was not dealing with stress well. He fought it, spoke to a chaplain and a his master chief. They both spoke to the psych dept on his behalf and he is now on his way to the Ike. I don't know what your son's issues are, but don't give up hope. One other point, my son was 19 when he graduated high school and because he wasn't going into college, but into the Navy, my husband's insurance dropped him. We were able to find insurance for him on line through Aetna. You can pay by the month, half year or full year at one time. It only covered major medical, but was very reasonable. I hope this helps. God bless you and hope all works out well for you and your son.

Hi Earlene, Welcome to ship 17(Ship 6) Moms.Sorry to hear your son is being discharged. I answered your questions as best I could in Ship 17 moms. Your son has the option of asking for a second opinion if he wants to stay in.Read thru the info in Ship 17 moms. You may find answers to your questions. Navy has a site dedicated to Ship 5 now. The link is at the top of ship 17 moms.

He was supposed to go to Pensacola, but is spending 2 months training time in GL, then on to sunny Florida. Seems to be making lots of friends and making the best of it. Friends from church are going to see PIR on Wed, when their son graduates. Hope Andrew can spend Thanksgiving with them.

My sailor is recieving a medical discharge for having migraines...

I need some information and I do not know who to ask, so maybe someone here will be able to give me some advise. My sailor arrived in Great Lakes on September 15 and graduated bootcamp on November 14, 2008. He started school immediately thereafter. While he was in school he had several upper respiratory infections and seemed not to be able to shake them completely. He also had a urinary track infection, they told him he was not getting enough fluids. Needless to say he spent a lot of time in sic… Continue

My son has been at GL since 09/19/08 and now has been told he is being discharged for medical reasons. I need some advice and some information

My son arrived at Great Lakes RTC on 09/19/08 and PIR'd on 11/14/08. He has been in school at GL since his PIR in November. He has had some issues and is now been informed that he is being given a medical discharge. When talking to him he does not seem to have very many answers to our many questions. Can anyone out there give us some insight on what we might expect to happen. We question about how this will reflect on his future ability for employment, future medical insurance issues, those sort… Continue
