Hi Elizabeth. I live in Bremerton, WA and saw your post that your daughter was coming to Bangor. Has she arrived yet? I live approximately 15 minutes from Bangor and goto Silverdale nearly everyday which is 5 minutes from Bangor. If there is anything I can do please feel free to call on me. When I was young, Bangor was my first duty station! It's a beautiful base. What command will she be attached to? I work for Navy Region Northwest.

Hi Elizabeth, just checking in on you and Ashley. Are you still with us? Hope all is well with both of your Sailors and you. We're watching those Hurricanes (those and tornadoes scare Washingtonians!) approaching your side of the States. Stay safe and dry! :-)

Hi Elizabeth, welcome to the Wa/Ore group. We love to adopt Sailors and make their Moms Honorary Members. =) I don't know if you saw Connie's answer to your post on our Group page, but let me echo her comments. I have lived in the Evergreen State for 35 years now, 24 of those on the Western of the State (Seattle etc.), known as the Puget Sound Region. It's heavily forested, primarily at sea level, though hillier than you are used to. It is a absolutely beautiful place to live! To look across the sparkling waters, Mt. Rainier off in the distance, on a sunny Seattle day -we actually do have those :) -especially at sunset, will take your breath away.

There is so much outdoor recreation and places to explore, coastal beaches, biking, hiking, kayaking, golfing, fishing, swimming, water sports and boating, snow skiing, and more. Don't know who has been scaring you with stories of snow, (so much fun to go play in!) I'd be more concerned about becoming like the tin man and rusting! LOL) Her tan will probably fade a little. :-) Plan on buying a raincoat and umbrella. Probably a parka too, temps are milder than you are used to, you're going to feel cold until you adjust. :) Seriously, the Eastern side of the State where I am is much more prone to large snow falls. "Seattleites" don't know what to do when an inch or two falls on the ground, they panic and everything, schools etc., shut down. Happens now and then. Takes more than that here. :)

Rain in the foothills and at sea level means great skiing in the mountains, but you have to drive a ways to get up to that! Let me and the group know what specific questions and concerns you have and we'll do our best to answer them and get Ashley as prepared as possible. Some of the other Moms with Naval experience and backgrounds could help you more with housing and specific info about Bremerton, Silverdale, Hood Canal and the rest of the Kitsap peninsula. It's a pretty area, less cosmopolitan and quieter, so housing prices and rent would be a little more reasonable. Plenty of amenities though. Meanwhile here's a couple sites to check out:

This one is my favorite: enjoy your tour and the spectacular pictures!:

Take care. Drop a comment or question on my page anytime. Again, welcome to Washington, hope you like apples!! :D

HI, my son is at Lackland AFB and will be graduating in a week. He is headed to Bangor which is about 5 hours from us so of course we are thrilled I see you have recieved some responses already which are good. Washington like Oregon just gets a lot of rain. Some snow, but mostly rain. The area Bangor is in is a lovely area and well known by tourists, much to do and see in that part of the state. Don't know about moving there, but I am sure you wil make the right choice. Let me know if I can help you in anyway, Leta
