Don't know about getting married in Mesa, unless he manages to get a long-enough leave....but one option would be to go to the Chicago Temple. it's only about 30-40 minutes from Great Lakes. My son got married in Chicago--not in the temple, unfortun…

I tried going to the link below for Norfok Naval Base & it came up "untrusted" security certficate. Anyone else had this issue? I'm wondering if it's something to do with my internet connection, or the Navy's site?

Haven't been active on N4M since son left GL last summer. Does anyone know if there is a group more specific than this one for Norfolk-based cruisers? I put "San Jacinto" in the search box for this site & that's how I found this group....

I just saw my dau-in-law's facebook post that my son is going to sea "for a week". Not sure what that's about.....just a shake-down before deployment?

For families and friends of Sailors who are stationed at Norfolk; for either Sea Duty or Shore Duty Sailors. Just make sure to keep OPSEC issues in mind and not disclose ship movements in advance.

Lower Lights

This is one of my favorite hymns (besides the Navy Hymn).
The tune name is Lower Lights and it was written by Phillip Paul Bliss, 1838-1876
I don't know any more of the history of it than that,
but it seems especially appropriate for us Navy Moms and other loved ones of sailors:

Brightly beams our Father's mercy
From his lighthouse evermore,
But to us he gives the keeping
Of the lights along the shore.

chorus: Let the lower lights be burning;
Send a gleam across the wave.
Some poor fainting, s… Continue

Hi Ellen,
Sorry I haven't been on in a while so I just got your question. During the summer between their junior and senior year, prospective students can apply for Summer Seminar. Both the Air Force and Naval Academies offer them. I don't know about Army and Merchant Marines because Nate is more interested in AF or Navy. Once you apply for the summer seminar, you are automatically considered for entrance in the academy. Being accepted for the seminar doesn't guarantee acceptance to the academy, but we hope it will help! They do an evaluation while the students are there of their physical, academic, leadership and other qualities. The kids also get to evaluate the academy to see if it is the right fit for them.

While there, they do physical activities, workshops, and keep a schedule similar to a midshipman (Navy). You can find more information on this website: http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/nass.htm Good luck to your son!

Was your son's marriage a surprise for you?

Yes that is what I meant :~} Your Sailor is not authorized to live off base as his schooling must be a certain lenght of time. Also your Sailor and his wife need to route spouse co-lo request chits though their COC to even have a chance of being stationed together.

They got married! WOW! Yes my husband and I meet them at the retreat, we where on one hand shocked they where there and on the other happy they where, if that makes sense. We sat and had a drink with them (soda for your boy as he is underage) one night and they asked us lots of questions about being dual Military. Than we sat by the bonfire and talked some more with them. Seemed like a nice boy.

Hi, Our sailor was here this weekend briefly and I do mean briefly . . . she arrived Friday around 6 PM and left about 2-3 PM on Saturday. Yes, she did pick up her ULA boyfriend - now spouse as well as items stored at her mom's place and up north (60 miles from the Twin Cities) to the family farm to get her stored items from her dad. Her dad finally met the ULA boyfriend - now spouse with the following report: ULA boyfriend was quiet and if he did say anything - was polite. And yes, he has removed some of his piercings!!!
I was especially sad for our sailor's dad since she did not spend any time visiting us on Friday and on Saturday, she was in a rush to get her things and return to base on time.
I would have liked to see her as well in person besided the texting but could not go to the family farm to see her since I had to complete the pre-game warm-ups for the SUPERBOWL - cleaning the house, shopping for groceries, find football plates, football napkins and pick up forks (red for the Cardinals), spoons (yellow for the Steelers) and knives (purple for the Vikings) and also some liquids.
Can't wait for the game to start!!!

The lasted update from our sailor is that her new spouse will be moving down there in two weeks. She had originally told us that he was thinking seriously of joining the Militery but due to two DUIs', I am thinking that he might not be accepted. So now he wants to go to school to take classes for computer science(?) and will try to do this at GL.
My response back to her was that he might as well take advantage of being married to a Navy spouse and getting his education. She is hoping to find housing off campus since she got her DAC pay.
She is waiting for the next step of FC to start as she did get her SCC and ENDOC completed.
While some people (including myself) think that texting is inpersonnel, at this time it is the best way to keep the communication gates open since she is not happy with us because we are not happy with the whole quick wedding thing. At least she is still responding to text messages :-/
PS. GO Arizona!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Ellen,
She got married last Sat. w/o her parents or me there. Her dad had not met this guy & mom is vacationing
out of the country. We all asked her to wait till after she had a handle on A School but obviously, she did what she wanted to do. From all that I have read on this site - sounds like she will need to complete lots of papers before he can move there.
