Happy Thanksgiving Gayle, I will also pray that Matt can get home for Christmas and get some Momma love. My big thanks this year at our table, to all the Navy Moms who helped me get through when no one else understood.

About me:
I am Gayle Decker, and my husband Bob and I have been married for 30 + years. Matt is our only child. We saw him graduate from Boot camp up in Great Lakes, Ill. this past February, '09. It was cold as all get out for 2 true Alabama southerners. We live so far south, you actually fall into the water if you go much further down. After completing A-school in Pensacola, Florida, Airman Decker is currently in C-school at Whidbey Island NAS, in Washington State. He is enjoying seeing another part of the country as he has lived in Alabama all of his life. He sure likes getting away from the heat and the hurricane season here in the summer. The Navy has been good for Matt, given him pride and purpose. Wow!! I have been impressed with all the changes in him. He was always a good guy, now he is becoming a great man. From what I've seen so far, he loves the Navy and will make a great sailor.
When he left home, I cried a lot, and my husband seemed lost too. I now spend much of my time riding horses and playing music, and my husband loves to kayak in the rivers located around our home and in Pensacola, Florida. I am a musician and play in a group called "Wildwood" with another friend and that helps to take up time and brings joy to us and others too. I also have a small cottage industry making rope halters for horses and other small tack items. My husband is building new friendships through kayaking and Bible Study at our Church and of course we try to spend time talking with Matt as much as possible. I know he (and we), will adjust accordingly to his new career as an AO in the Navy...you know how it goes, "IYAAOYAS", or some such anacronym. Don't you love learning a new alphabet??? :^)
I am here to support or represent my:
Son/Daughter
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?

When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud and encouraged it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
You have to let your child go when they make a serious decision like joing the military. It is frightening enough to leave home and family, without us parents showing our fears and crying too much. It is time for our son to spread his wings and become all that God created him to be. We have to put him in the Lord's hands everyday and trust that he will be under the shadow of the almighty no matter where he is. Bob and I will also find other ways to love and counsel him now that he is an adult. This transition won't be easy, but it sure will be worthwhile for all of us.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

More than you probably want to know!

We are a family that loves the Lord and each other. Our "sailor son" Matt is our only child, so we have a big trust in the Navy. We gave them our only, our brightest and our best. Our prayer is that he will one day return all the better for it. Seeing himself and the world in a new light. Trusting His Savior, Jesus Christ, to take him through all the trials that leaving home for a military life will bring up.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you near and far.

I hope that you all will enjoy the Thanksgiving holidays. It will be the first time our Navy AO is not home for the holidays. I pray he'll get home for Christmas, but if not, I know I have lots of Moms that will be understanding how I feel this first holiday without our only child. I'm proud of those who leave… Continue

Getting the job Done

Well, my son is currently on a training stay on the USS John C. Stennis. He is finally "really" doing the job he has been training to do for almost a year. He is having the time of his life. He is an AO so he is working with the jets now, and says he has a new appreciation for the men and women on the f… Continue

Back from Whidbey Island

My husband and I just got home from visiting up in Washington at Whidbey Island with our son, who also finished C school, and so we got to help him move into new barracks. What a beautiful place. Deception Pass was a wonderful place to take pictures and hike through the park. The little towns of Coupville, and… Continue

Gayle Matt's Mom

Just accomplished first video computer call.

What a hoot...Matt had to talk me through it the whole time, but then our faces popped up on the computer, and there he was. Moving a little mechanically, but, still good to see his smile. He took the camera and showed us around his room, and outside his window. We could hear a jet take of… Continue

Matts smile is a perfect indication of him loving his AO job! Do you know what his AO trainer name is? A friend of mine on here, her daughter is AO on the Stennis and just went out also. So glad the weather is better for you to ride..long time to wait. Jill will be coming home for Christmas and maybe bring her horse back for a week for her to enjoy, time will tell, it can get a bit expensive. Hope to hear more of Matts adventures. Take care.

Hi Gayle... Of COURSE I remember you!!! I have been quite a mess the last few weeks... Cody was home for 18 days and is in Seattle as we speak, waiting to leave for Japan. Many stories to share, and so many emotions to sort out.
I am happy to hear Matt is finally doing his job! LOL :-) I hope to hear more and to be in touch, especially once I am back to being a "normal" human being again!
Talk soon,
Sue

My husband was at Whidby. We transferred to VA BCH in 05. If your son needs a car my son has one up there for sale. Needs a tire rim and 2 new tires. When hubby retired we were hoping to go back. But no jobs thay were all on the East coast. Anyways yes my son is like a fish out of water there. He also has a hard time getting off base cause they have to be with someone.

Thank you. Where is your son in Washington ? My husband is in the mountains up there elk hunting. He will be home on Sunday. We are actually from Washington. And I am never upset when I talk with him on the phone. But when I get off the phone then I let it out. It was so hard for me to keep myself here at home after I heard what that kid said. The only real father figure my boys (4) have had is my husband now. There father lives in WA. But him and his girlfriend told my son in front of one of his friends that he was never going to amount to anything. Her kids have always been in trouble with the law. Mine never have. My cell phone is 757-642-6773

OK Thank You. He told me last night he felt like having a breakdown. But he didn't. But I tell you kids can be so cruel.

Thank you so much Gayle, I am sure that mom appreciates your efforts. Jill is better, she still gets so excited when on the flight line and gets to do something new. She texts me to share it all! Too funny. I hope the enthusiasm continues. Her cold is better, but I do get concerned she has had about 10 different times since January where she is extremely congested, not too sure why? She has had allergy checks, but they couldnt find anything common she was allergic to? Sometimes I do believe she doesnt eat right, with her hours, the galley is hardly available to her. So she is eating food on the run. I have sent her a box with food that is a little more nourishing so we will have to see. Thanks again for your visit with my sailor. Keep in touch Kathy

Hi Gayle, not sure if you are even available, there is a post on N4M on Sailor Rescue, the mom is looking for a mom who is near P'cola to go talk with her son, he is in A school there. Sounds like he is having a tough time lately, and she can't go down to be with him. I am just letting you know, but certainly not trying to commit you to anything. You are a very loving person, with a big heart, maybe this sailor could use a mom hug? Thanks for your time. hope all is well. Kathy
