An update plus my rambling... This morning the Master Chief of the Hospital Corps School returned my call. I mentioned my concerns to her about my son's finances, giving her the big picture instead of all the little details. I did give her a brie...

NavyDad - Yes, it's Navy Hospital Corps School. He's at Great Lakes. Whether or not he gets a free half hour, he needs to use it. I too question paying for computer time as well - either he's giving me a line or he took one person's word for somet...

G's Mom, I take it that NHCS stands for Navy Hospital Corps School? I'm not sure about the "pay for computer" usage. It sounds a little sketchy to me. Enjoy your weekend, too.

NavyDad - Thank you. I'm guessing this financial counselor is probably the same person he's been told about by the 2 instructors. The one who is hardly in her office (or so my son says he's been told). Problem is, he won't seek further - the answe...

Yup...this stuff is so typical. He doesn't have to be going through all of this stress. All that he has to do is "request" to see a command financial counselor...every command is required to have at least one. The command financial counselor will ...

Well, I called this morning and left a message for the Master Chief . The lady who took the message got the basic information, such as my son's name, last 4 of SS#, and what it was regarding (finances are really getting out of hand). Haven't heard...

NavyDad. - Thanks for the reminder.

Just a concerned "Mom" call...don't worry, the CMC will pass that on to your son's leading chief or class advisor. Have a great holiday!

One good thing - I told him I'm selling his truck. I cosigned, so I'd be "stuck" with it anyways. $325 extra for him to put towards bills if he can figure out that responsibility thing. I think that's a bit of a relief for him. It's stored at my d...

just venting....throw in any words of wisdom if you want I wonder what part of my son's brain is out of financial whack. *bangs head against wall* No luck in reaching the Master Chief; trying again tomorrow. Son's now in the negative because he...

This is a tough call but I would talk to someone of importance in his command. Your son can be dishonorable discharged if his finance's get to far out of hand. Far better for you to nip it now then have him calling later because someone is trying ...

Everyone - I truly appreciate your comments, concerns, viewpoints, and suggestions. Again, this is not something that I am taking lightly, and I continue to give it much thought. For the most part, there is a distinct difference between the respon...

Tough Love

Does anyone know how I can contact my son's immediate superior or whoever has the most contact with the sailors? (Master Chief??? Leading Chief Petty Officer???) I've called his recruiter, who said he'd try to find the information (we'll see).

My son's in the NHCS, 5th or 6th week.

Thank you.

G's Mom, I just sent a friend request and read the comments here. Laura's last comment is really helpful since I have the same anxiety you do!:) My son is PIR 10/09 also, and will be in corpsman school with your son. That is what he went in for...why he enlisted. I have supported him since he made the decision, but still hope that something will change and he wouldn't be on front lines.. now I have a silly question, what is FMTB?

My friends son who I've known since he was four enlisted with the Marines 18 months ago and has spent almost the whole time on the front lines. My girlfriend was exactly like you. She not only feared for his physical safety but also his mental well-being. He got leave and came home in April 2009 and was for all intensive purposes, "himself". Now, you know how us mother's are, lol......this worried my friend to no end because he seemed unaffected but what he had seen so she asked him what his thoughts were. He told her that he was there to do a job, to help defend is country and to look out for his fellow soldiers. He also said that he had seen a lot of horrible stuff but so do many other people in the course of their work. Trauma/ER Dr.'s, nurses, paramedics and law enforcement to name a few. His outlook was right on target and I'm sure that is because of his top notch training and well as family support. I think that your son will do fine......he's got the training and will get more and he clearly has a wonderful supportive mom. I hope that some of this helps.

Sorry about that, but when I looked I thought it said IN for Indiana! Whatever your son gets into, he'll be okay as long as he puts his heart into it. Those that don't study hard, don't make it sometimes. If your son would get to be one of the top 4 in the class, he would get offered the "education petty officer" EPO position and he would tutor those having a tough time. He then doesn't have to pull duty anywhere else and basically is off weekends. Just so you know...my son really liked it not standing out in the rain, etc. So my son is working in the dental clinic in CP now and they are training him with charting and that good stuff. He said that he doesn't feel that his Dental Asst C School was a waste at all, and has actually opened some doors for him in other things. It wasn't that hard either. Well, hopefully things go well for your son. Keep me posted.

Hi there, just another short note. My son PIR'd 2-06-09 and got a new contract for Hospital Corpman...then C-School Dental Asst...(not what he wanted but long story)...and now is waiting to classup for FMTB at Camp Pendleton, San Diego, CA. He was supposed to only stay as Dental Asst but he wanted something different than Dental so he studied hard and became the Valedictorian of his class so was able to pick where he went. He chose FMTB and that's what he is waiting for now. He was supposed to take his FMF in Okinawa, but they changed his orders at the last minute and now he stays at CP. It's possible that after FMTB he could get shipped to Camp Lejuene for FMF but don't think that will happen...depends on several things that has to do with the Navy needs right now. There is so much that can happen between PIR and FMTB that don't worry about what he is getting into. He obviously has signed a contract and that is what they will follow. You can ask him if it says that he "deploys" after two weeks. I don't think it will. It's possible that he will "ship out" to FMTB within two weeks of PIR, sometimes the way that their orders are is really confusing! So just keep praising your recruit (not a Sailor until he does PassInReview) and make plans to go if you can. Need any advice about where to stay, ask Sailors in Corpsman A School Moms or Corpsman Moms. They will fill you in...we've all been through it. Also, if he is going Corpsman, after A School there is also a graduation. I was told that it is the only A School that has a graduation. If you can make that one, it is a much smaller one and really nice. Have a great day. RUth p.s. also, we live in Michigan and our son would take the train home and we would pick him up there, much cheaper than paying for motels and they really want to get out of GL. Towards the end of A-school he would come home more often.
