Crusty, I wish my son would have read your information before he went into the Navy. He has worked security, sales, court officer, large (and small) animal vet assistant and was a police officer which was what he worked the other jobs for to get to…

I would like to clarify many of the things i have read in this whole post, while some are right on point, others are way off. I am a current career recruiter in new york. I have 4 stations and 16 recruiters working with me. the navy is at an ever ch…

You have a number of questions there, but I'll try to answer them and make some sense. First, these tough economic times there are a lot of people deciding to enlist, so really choice assignmets get taken faster I suppose. But if nothing attractive…

Susan, Crusty doesn't appear to be on the site anymore, there have been no replies from him in a few months. The question about a degree--sailors earn credits for what they are trained for in the military but it is not enough for a degree. Also, t…

Crusty, I have a few questions. My son went to Meps and he qualified. He was told he did very well and qualified for almost everything. Then when he got to meps he was only offered two positions. I think my son was pressured to take one or the other…

Hi Crusty,
You seem very knowledgeable and most likely, hopefully the person who can answer my questions.
I am currently in the Marines, although I am a Navy brat, and I am five months away from my EAS. I have done four years in the Corps, but am thinking of going Navy, as I should have in the first place.
Thing is, I have family matters to take care of over in Italy - my Mother retired from the Navy over there and passed away two years ago leaving me her estate, but I never had the chance to get over there and take matters into my own hands; legal and personal -but I do not want to delay entering into the Navy, seeing that I have a baby and a husband to take care of.
Can I requst to be sent there on orders? What would I have to give them in order to get orders if they accept? I heard that I might have to give up a rank (I am an E-4 now), is that true?
Basically, will there be a quid pro quo deal, if it is agreed to send me to Italy?
Does the Navy have Italian linguists?
I am currently in the administration field for the Marines, but I do speak fluent Italian...(?)
I realize this is probably not the best time to think on joining, because of the economy and all, but I really have no other options in life.
My Mother loved the Navy, and I kind of absorbed her pride as well - nothing would mke me happier than being a sailor in the Navy!
Thank you very much for your time, Crusty,
Very Respectfully,
M. Morrell

Hi Crusty, I just read your post and wish I had read it before my son joined. He is in week 4 of boot camp. When he started talking to a recruiter, I guess he wanted to feel independent (he is 19) and wanted to do it all on his own. Had I known that me or my husband could have attended all these meetings, we would have. When he went to MEPS and took his ASVAB, he said they started looking at career options. He REALLY wanted to be in firefighting and I don't have a clue if there are any fields for that. He was so anxious to join, he went ahead and signed up as Airman Career Track (APACT).

From what I have learned on here, that means he is undesignated. His recruiter told him he would be in A school (probably in Pensacola) for 8 weeks. He just found out that they will send him to Pensacola for 2 weeks and then straight to the fleet. I imagine this means he is going to be a "grunt". I would really like to hear some encouraging words that all is not lost for him. I'm wondering how long will he be at sea, where he is going, and all that. But, I'm really wondering when will he have the opportunity to test or get into a field that interests him.

We were also at MEPS with him the day he shipped out, but didn't know that we could attend any of the meetings. I feel like we missed some golden opportunities to help him.

Thanks for any advice, and thanks for caring enough to be on here.

Hi Crusty, my name is mike. I am planning on enlisting right after my 18th birthday. My father won't sign for me. I am planning on going into an advanced rate such as nuke or advanced ET or FC. I took the practice ASVAB and got a 91 so i know i will qualify. Anyways, when i go to meps i want to bring a list of important points and things that i want to make sure are in my contract. What items should i make sure get in the contract?

oooh up by Tower? I went blueberry picking up by some falls around that area once. I haven't fished the boundry waters in many years, but we are planning a trip early next fall when the skeetos are not quite as bad. I see that Mel from Tuscon was asking about your fishing too :) she is another that loves to fish as much as I do, and I have been trying to get her down to ND for some early spring pike fishing. We have fishing all year long down here, and I was involved in a study a few years ago about if not having any of the season closed is detrimental to walleye and pike populations. It doesn't seem to be an issue acording to the scientist who studied it.
Talk to you soon, how deep of water was that big ole fish in?

I'd heard of Gold Canyon but did know it was up near Phx. I think it's great you all get to "winter" out here. I love it here in the winter. It's the only reason we won't move.....lol

Oh, I see Shell is talking fish! We need a fish group!!

I have lots of cousins around Minneapolis and an uncle in Big Lake. Dad was born & raised in Superior, WI.

What part of Minn. do you fish? We have a private lake down there, the walleye don't jump in your boat, you have to work for them, but it is beautiful.

I was born & raised here. I know right where she is. NE from me. About 5 miles.

Do you drive down to Tucson or bring the RV? We had a 5th wheel for years, but with my asthma it's just to much work.

Hubby retired from Union Pacific Railroad as a Locomotive Engineer so I use Amtrak a lot. I miss the Seattle to San Francisco run, especially the Oregen coast.
