Hi, Heather and welcome to Sub Moms! "I.A." stands for "Individual Augmentee." This assignment is a voluntary one that takes a sailor away from his normal duty station and he is deployed to a "hot zone" somewhere. His presence there will free someone (probably Army or Marines) from being in a support role to a more forward position.

The incentives for volunteering for an IA assigment include money and promotion. Also, it's only for a year, then the sailor returns to his Naval job. Hope that helps! k.

Heather,
Hello, and I know how you feel about sending your son. Bob also does not think he will be home for a couple of years. He knows that he does not have the time to come home this year, and the cost being what it is will also be prohibitive. My folks live in FL and his other grandparents live in NJ. He will be able to see his NJ grandparents, but not my parents before he leaves. He is miserable about that, but with the short amount of time he will be home, about 10 days or so, he will not have the time to fly down to FL. My dad is in a frail health state and he is worried that he will not get to see him again. Bob did tell me that he really doesn't get to pick when he comes home, that the subs basically shut down for a period of time and that is when they get to come home. Of course we are planning a trip to Hawaii, how could you pass that up??? :0) I am the kind of person who saves so my husband told me that I'll have to start saving money, change, etc. so we can take our trip. I guess I have to start working on my Hawaii beach body for that trip! :0) It is so hard to put them on that plane, I feel for you. We may have to take Bob to JFK, to get his plane, so I am hoping we can take him to the airport in Albany or Syracuse, which are alot closer to home. I guess a couple of his friends want to come with us when he leaves, which is fine although I was hoping to have him all to myself. (Going to make sure that I bring alot of tissues.) Good luck to you and I look forward to hearing from you in the future. We can share our son's Hawaii stories. Best of luck to you.

Heather,
Hello! My son graduates on July 17th in Groton. He will then be home for about 10 days or so and then he goes to Hawaii. He has to be there by Aug. 2nd. What rate does your son have? Is he on a sub? My son will be on the USS Columbia. My son's rate is ET/NAV. It is hard sending them so far away. I am thrilled for him, and we do get a place to visit, but it is still hard. And of course my husband just doesn't understand, his comment is always, "he is 20 years old, time for him to grow up!" Problem is, he is all grown up and it's mom who is having a hard time seeing him go. But go he will and I'll continue to be so proud of him. I wish you and your son all the best, and who knows maybe our kids will meet up.

I talked to my boyfriend briefly today and he is also staying in Groton for A school and he said he graduates in april. That seems like a very long time for that. That is just what they are saying now but we will see. I just shipped his phone out so hopefully I will know more.
