Stephen has matured alot. He actually is much better about talking with me now. When he as in GL, he never got a signal....so he says. Sometimes he would go 4-5 weeks before I talked to him. Now, it is a least once a week.
I am glad your son is doing good. Let me know when he gets his orders.
Hi Helen, haven't heard from you in a while. How is Matt doing in C school?? Stephen is really liking C school and Dam neck. He is doing so much better...As on all of his tests. He even won a class competition last week and got off class early. He finally got his FC3. I drove his truck up to him for the 4th of July from Florida. He had off from Thursday to Tuesday, so me and him got to spend some quality time in Virginia Beach. It was really nice.
He is going to be stationed out of Norfolk on the USS Bataan, an LHD amphibious ship. He has a second C school in Norfolk, then will report to the ship in Nov. It is on deployment now, so hopefully it will not be deployed again for awhile. Crossing my fingers.
There are only 12 people in the class and it's considered full. I remember you said Matt got orders for Dahlgren and showed your profile pic to my husband and he said he knows him! I'm not sure about when they'll get orders, but on the first day of class he came home and said the next option is Norfolk, Mayport, Everett, Wa, San Diego, Japan or Pearl Harbor. I think they told them we should be here til January or February though.
Glad to hear your son is liking Dahlgren, my husband is in the same class as him. It's like night and day between here and GL, imagine them actually getting treated like adults, and getting off duty at a reasonable hour! We like it here too, just getting used to how secluded it is!
I'm really interested in what FCS/ORTS also. From what Mary posted, sounds like my son doesn't do just CIWS - but maybe some gun systems too. PS Matt's PIR is my B-day.
Helen, Stephen called. He did start his classes today. He thought he would be on hold for a week. He loves Dam neck. Went to Virginia Beach with some friends yesterday...says it reminds him of home here in FL.
He will be moving tomorrow to his new room....free internet, free cable, someone to clean his room.....Wow... I am shocked... He said that since he is assigned a ship, they pay for these things.
Well, at least he seems happier. He is supposed to be done with school and report to his ship in November.
No sobbing Helen, just smile with all that Navy Mom pride! He will be at Dahlgren for a good while so as long as he is still in school it is a good thing. Nick did an event yesterday for honor guard and on Monday they have two retirement ceremonies. He really seems to enjoy the program and the people and as an added bonus they only do duty every 8 days vs. four. I'm sure each time we see our sons come home, it will be a little different than their last visit - I think Nick will get to see home one more time before he actually heads for his first ship...that trip I am going to be the one sobbing!!! Enjoy the next few days but I think you are right, they have come to enjoy the structure, they have friends and they definitely enjoy C school much more than A school. I'll be curious which shift his classes are and what duty section he gets. Keep us posted.
Hi Helen, I did speak to Nick today and told him that Matt would be flying in soon and how should he handle the duty driver situation. He offered this phone # 540-653-1031 or 1032, it's for the duty desk and he can call them to arrange for a duty driver. He said...don't make the same mistake that he made. Nick waited until he landed at Dulles to call them and it's a couple hour drive from base to airport. So by the time they picked him up and then got back to the base it was close to 2 am. He did say he could call in advance and give them a headup that he is coming in but the best thing to do is to call them that morning so he is dealing with one duty section.
Also............................a recent change to duty sections there. Nick said he had duty ALL weekend. I knew he had it on Saturday but as of last week if you have duty on Saturday - you also have it on Sunday. Similiar to GL but they do not have duty on Fridays if they have weekend duty. I think once a month, he will have weekend duty. Matt will know what I'm talking about.
I'm sure you are enjoying having him home :-)
Helen, hi it is Lynn Gazzillo. I am so happy Matt is coming home today. Ralph Jr. is coming home this Friday for 10 days. He just got his Petty Officer 3rd Class. Is Matt looking forward to going to Virgina. It seems like yesterday we were waiting for the first phone calls from BC. They have all come a long way. I know you will enjoy every minute he is home. God Bless
