The Navy was something my son had always wanted to do. So after obtaining a degree from OSU and being in the work force for 4 years he finally was able to join and is now in the initial school for Intelligence Specialist ( IS ). Even after he was aw…

My daughter thought it would be nice to send her brother homemade cookies after he had been at BC awhile. However he had to open them in front of an officer and then he was not allowed to keep them. So we only sent him letters every few days. Jane

Hi, Jane!
Welcome to the Moms of IS Sailors group! We have Moms with sailors in all phases of their Navy careers - from boot camp to the fleet - so it's a good place to ask questions. My son, Jim, has been in for one year and is stationed overseas.
Jump into the group whenever you're ready...everyone is so nice! I'm looking forward to getting to know you and hearing about your sailor! Ellen

Jane first let me apologize for the mix up. I was gathering some info for a young lady whose boyfriend is at Corry Station and was replying to you and somewhere during my reply my brain got confused and I put in the wrong reply.
Ryan is a handsome sailor, that part I know I did not confuse. And I did add the prom pic so on that I did not get confused. Forget all the CT and Corry Station stuff. That's where I got messed up (I'm too old to trust my memory)!
I am happy you got to talk with your sailor for Mother's Day. Did he tell you which area of IS he is studying in C school? If he has already started C school for OpIntel then he may be in my son's class! Did he say when he expects to leave Dam Neck? I don't know when all the classes are starting but I know a few and some of them I can find out from Chris. My son will be finished with school in two weeks and then comes home for leave before reporting to his first Duty Command.
What prompted Ryan to join the Navy? He will move up quickly already having college behind him. Chris mostly went for the educational benefits and for the IS training. He did a youth forum a few years ago on defence, intelligence and diplomacy and loved it. When he found out his vision was not sharpe enough for the Pilot Program, Intel was his second choice and it was open. He grabbed the opportunity. He must like it a lot (Lord knows I could never get him to study!). I really thought after two weeks of A school he would be looking for an easier rate. He's done well so it means something to him.
Have a good day and God bless you.

Hi Jane, I just wanted to let you know that the pics of Chris and his date for the prom did get approved yesterday and are on the viewer now at my page. I am soon going to remove all the pics of him that show his face so look soon. After he gets out of school I'm going to only post distant shots or pics of his back, etc. I did do a little research on Corry Station at P'cola. Yes, he is an arm of IS, he is likely going to have the rating of CT which is a cryptologist. I don't know much about that area except that it is most foreign languages and decoding messages. The CTs are the guys who wear decoder rings and find the secret messages. teehee just kidding about the ring part. That is the bulk of the job though is decoding and coming up with new codes for our side to use. I've heard it's a very tough job to learn. I know you are proud of him.
By the way Jane, he's a very nice looking fellow too. Have a good weekend and I hope to hear from you soon.

Jane I posted a pic from the prom on my viewer just a little while ago but it will have to be approved before they will allow it to load. Maybe tomorrow or Wednesday before anyone but me can see it. It will be there soon. I'm sorry I don't know much about the other schools. I'm going to try to find out all I can about Correy Station and the CT school in CA and I'll post what I can in Ellen's discussion of IS and subspecialties. I hope you had a glorious day yesterday.

Jane,
Is your son doing "pure" Intell? Is he at Dam Neck for school? If so then after his 13 weeks of A school, he will be given the opportunity to list his preference for his specialty training. He may choose OpIntel (Operations Intell), Imagery, Strike or a couple of others. Then depending on the specialty he is given he will have 5-15 weeks of C school where he learns that specialized job.
I think your son will do very well (there's a LOT of study involved) and I believe he will like the job. My son was not a very studious kid but he has studied his rear off in the Navy and enjoys it. Keep me posted! Are you ok with what he has chosen to do? Are you adjusting to the, not knowing what is going on?
Have a good day Navy Mom and Happy Mother's Day!
Hugs,
Mary

Jane, thank you for complimenting our state. I do hope your son in law makes it back soon. I know that will be a big relief to all. We have another Ohio mom as well in our group. Anna and her husband live there as well as one of thier daughters. Her other daughter is a Personnel Specialist stationed in Washington and her younger son Chris just finished A school at Dam Neck with my Chris a few weeks ago. My Chris has currently three more weeks of OpIntel C school and Anna's Chris is waiting to class up for Strike C School at the end of June. Then her son is headed to Nevada and mine will be going to S.Korea. Her son is a fleet returnee who used to be an AO (Air Ordnanceman) on a carrier.
Sorry it took me so long to get back. I went out for dinner. How long has your son been in? Is he happy thus far? have a great evening!
Navy Hugs;
Mary

Jane do not worry about the computer skills (or lack thereof). A lot of us are not computer savvy. We do have a couple of moms here who are likely as old or older. We have one couple in their mid-sixties and another mom whose husband is in his mid-sixties and another couple in I'd say early sixties. Her son has been in forever. Not really but he was a corpsman for several years and been in Intell for about 8 years now. All total about 17? years. Certainly don't feel outdated around us!
The good thing about this is that we don't do live chats so if it takes all day to type something out, we don't know it. :) You just jump right in whenever you feel comfortable. If you just want to read the posts for a few day to get a feel and think you ready, we welcome you with open arms (virtual arms but opened all the same). Take your time. We are all in for a few years so there's plenty of time to get to know everyone. Enjoy!

Hi Jane, Welcome to the IS moms site! I hope we get to know you and we look forward to getting to tell you about our sailors as well! We are a pretty "tight" group and as we don't much about our sailor's jobs we tend to talk about ourselves, our lives, and our families so we know each other pretty well. We support each other through all types of stuff. We laugh a lot, cry a little and get kind of "chatty" about nothing sometimes. Please come jump in and let us know about you!
