Any recommendations of what rates might be the best ones to get into? Preferrably ones that do NOT require combat???....

Thank you Dawn. That DOES help. To be honest, I was looking at this as a negative thing. I need to see it as a POSITIVE thing for my son. You are right - the more free training he receives, the more he will be able to do when he does retire. I guess…

Hi group. I need some help with understanding something. My son's enlistment is up in January, and he was recently told that if he wants to stay in, he will have to change rates. He is currently a yoeman stationed in Norfolk. His commander is extrem…

BTY, thanks so much for the response.

I really don't know, and my son doesn't either. His commander is very, very happy with the work he's doing, but says he can't do anything about it. He did take my son to the career counselor's office to try to figure out what to do. That's where he…

No responses? That's unusual. I need some help understanding this. Anybody have any ideas, please? Any insights?

Hi group. I just received word that my son's enlistment will end in January. He wants to make a career of the Navy, and planned to remain a yoeman the whole time. He was told that in order to stay in the Navy he will have to change rates. What is th…

I wish her all the luck in the world. My son said that he knew about it already. So I asked him if he planned to just throw away $4,000.00 a year, and he said that he hadn't looked at it that way. Maybe he'll look into it. I sure hope so.

You can pick my brain as much as you want, but it's kinda empty, and what's left is scrambled, so you takes your chances, know what I mean? All I can really suggest is to be encouraging, up-beat, and let her know how proud you are of her. Boot camp…

I agree. I'm going to talk to him tonight. Thanks so much for that information. It could be invaluable to him later.

When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was concerned or afraid
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
That my son wanted to do well in his life, but maybe didn't have the direction he needed in order to do that UNTIL he joined the Navy.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

Thanks Janet,
We already made new reservations at Poppa rolo's and they welcomed us with open arms. It still feels good to know that we have support. I look forward to seeing you there. Don't forget to send me your sailors pic with full name and rate along with the names of anyone you are bringing. I'm making some really cool badges for us all.
Thanks again!

Janet, I was born in Austin, lived in Houstin until a freshman in high school, moved back to Texas in 1976 and spent almost 30 years in Midland where all 4 of my kids were born. I moved to Glenwood Springs in September 2005. When I retire, I plan to move to Palestine in East Texas to be closer to my siblings. The irony is this part of CO was once part of Texas. Are you a native Texan?

Clay was a YN with a SeaBee unit and traveled alot. His SeaBee unit was deployed to Iraq for 6 months in August 2005 and after he came back I learned that YNs do not always sit behind a desk. He really likes Key West, but his is "it" for his job--there is no one else to cover for him if he goes on leave, etc. Besides the Admin duties, he processes the personnel records and that is what he likes the most. He would really like to be able to advise other sailors what they need to complete for advancement. Clay's enlistment is up in 20 months and his re-up will depend on duty stations and advancement opportunities.
