My son Joe is scheduled to report to Norfolk VA on 11/26 and then leave for Bahrain somewhere around 12/2. I'm meeting with another navy mom Friday to ask all my questions. Her son just returned from there. What ship is your son assigned to? Cathy - Joe's mom
My name is Cathy and I live in NY. My son Joe graduated BC in August and is just finishing A school. He was scheduled to go to Norfolk VA and just learned yesterday that his ship is in Bahrain and he is to go meet his ship when he reports to VA. How is your son doing there? Does he like it? What did he take with him? I have so many questions and I don't know who to ask. How do you know how long they will be there? Any info you could share with me would be greatly appreciated. Hope all is well with you and your son. Cathy (Joe's mom)
If you ever have an emergency, even while Scott is in boot camp, call the American Red Cross, and they will get in touch with him.
If all goes well, maybe Scott will be able to come back home for the wedding.
Crystal said she was going to try to come home around the first of the year, which will be 6 months into her deployment. So, I'll just have to wait and see how that goes too. I hope I don't have to wait until next July to see her again, but if I do, I do.
I have a niece that is thinking about going in now. She has some minor medical things that she is worried about, but I don't see that any of it is bad enough to keep her out. She has some kind of knee condition, which does not bother her very much anymore. Plus she has that TMJ, its some kind of Jaw thing. I don't know. I told her that if its nothing major I don't think they will keep her from joining. Crystal never had anything like that. Do you anything about that?
Bahrain is not a bad place to be stationed. My son has been there since October '07. He loves it. Although when he was home last month and it started to rain, he commented that it (the rain) was a 'rare sight', because it hasn't rained since he has been there. The do have sand storms though. George liked it well enough that he signed on to stay there another year, so he will be there until Nov. '09. He is an MA and is in the weapons department. He has worked in the armory on base and also on the harbor. He says the best part about his job is that no 2 days are ever alike.
I asked Crystal about the vacations, and this is what she told me. If Scott is "Mobile Forces" he can start requesting for vacation after 6 months, but he may not get it approved for a year. She said that most people don't get approved until they have been in Bahrain for a year.
Talk to you later,
Pat
One of the reasons I am interested in the vacation time is that my other son is getting engaged and will be planning a wedding next year. I want to make sure that Scott will be home to attend. the only thing I asked of my son Brian was to make sure they do it when Scott can be there.
Regarding Rahmadan (spelling?) - I know with the muslim religion they have to fast from sun up to sun down. That means nothing to eat or drink - not even water. yuch.
Can you tell me how much time was Crystal in Mississippi and also San Diego before shipping out to Bahrain? When did she graduate BC? My husband Clay seems to think that if Scott waited until he is being shipped off to Bahrain to come home - then he'd be home for Christmas for 3 weeks. But I think I can kiss Christmas goodbye for seeing him this year. This whole thing can really be depressing. You know - we're happy for the kids because they're excited about doing new things but... Anyway - thanks for all the info. I'll probably have a dozen more questions for you after I talk with Scott this weekend.
talk later - jayne
Oh I don't mind answering any of your questions. I had them myself, and Crystal does me the same way, just tell me half the story sometimes...lol
I don't think Crystal "signed up" for the 2 years in Bahrain. She told me (now, I don't know if this is the whole truth) that they gave her the orders and she had no chioce. First, they came back and told her that she was going to Guam. I got all excited about Guam, its paradise. But then she calls a week or so later and says she is going to Bahrain. So I had to start dealing with it then.
I don't know when she can take vacation, I have heard after 6 months, and then I have heard 1 year. So, I'll check on that and get back to you. As far as when they get leave after A-School, I don't know what determines that. I do know that some came home after San Antonio, some after Mississippi and some (like Crystal) after San Diego. I don't think they really know, unless its written on their orders. If Scott's orders say he'll have leave for 2 weeks before Mississippi, then he will.
Bahrain is 7 hours ahead of us. If it is 1pm here, it is 8pm there. I make sure if I call its around 12, because she is usually on her way to diner then.
Oh and the escorts, most of them go on "on board" escorts. The sailors are manning machine guns mounted on board civilian ships. Cargo ships, oil freighters. Then there are some sailors are aboard Navy vessels. It depends on what they are needed to do at the time. Crystal is an on board escort for the cargo ships.
I haven't heard the term "Special Security Services" but they are part of what they call "Security Forces" its some how part of "Homeland Security." I'm not for sure, but I think its like a Special Operations division of the Master At Arms.
I'll have to see about that Skype thing. Right now, I'm paying $ .68 a minute to call her. My phone bill has went through the roof...lol Anything to help out.
I'm going to get off here, I have to run go get my niece from school. If I have missed answering any of your questions, let me know...lol Oh and I'll get back with you on the vacation and all, I should talk to Crystal this weekend. Oh and one more thing, I just thought of this. The work week for them over there is Sunday thru Thursday. They get Friday and Saturday off, because Friday is the Muslem holy day. Right now Crystal says they are going thru the "Holy Month of Rahmadan" (now that might be misspelled...lol)
and the sailors have to go by rules of conduct during this month. I can't remember what all she said they can't do, but its not a lot. They just have to respect their way of life.
Well, I have to run. I'll talk to you later.
God Bless,
Pat
