If you are renting a car to drive to the base you need to plan to be at the gate around 6:30 am. That's when I got there and was lucky to be about the fourth car in line. If you want to purchase a T-shirt or sweatshirt of your son's division you need to get them when you first get there because they run out of size selection in a hurry. They are really neat because each division designs their own flag then this design is put on the shirts. Also I think you need cash for them. Once you get inside the hall look for the division sign that your sailor is in and sit in front of it. Also if you go the the NEX while you're there you might want to purchase a Bluejacket Manual. It's got all the information you need and can answer a lot of questions. These are just some things that were told to me before I went that made it easier for me when I got there so I thought I would pass them along. I was lucky to have a student in my room that had a brother that graduated a month before my son so the information he mom was able to pass on made it easier for me. Hope this helps.

Jayne- I saw in the chatroom you were asking where to enter for PIR. There is a main gate and it is very well marked. You enter there and then the parking lot is on the right. You proceed from the parking lot to the guard shack and they check you in. Make sure everyone has their ID ready. From there you can go to the ceremony hall. Everything runs very smoothly. Have a wonderful time at PIR!!!!!

The sixth is PIR. The meet and greet is the night before so that we can put the warm bodies with the names and words of supports that we have been enjoying. The next day, we will all be very busy with our sailors! Yea!

Sorry, I guess I misunderstood. You certainly are right about the freezing part - especially at this time of the year. My son graduated at the end of March last year and it was still bad then. Make sure you have something to cover your face. The wind is terrible.

If you are unsure about attending the PIR don't be. I highly recommend it. It is something you will never forget and your sailor will be glad you are there to share in it with him.

I had originally booked the hotel with the flight and was charged $155/night at the Holiday Inn Express on Buckly. But after seeing all the rates everyone posted here, decided it would be in my best interest to call the hotel and explain the situation (why I was coming, etc). They reduced the charges from $155 to $99 so I am happy and looking forward to being there for such an honorable occassion. When I talked to the Hotel, the guy I talked to said it was so cold, it almost hurts to take a breath. That part of the trip may be a real shocker for someone from Southern California. I was shivering when it was 50 degrees here, but the weather there this time of year is likely to be something not soon forgotten.

Jayne, we are staying at the Ramada in a room with 3 queen beds and when I called the hotel, got a cheaper than online price. Only $119 a night. You might try them...
