I'm married to the love of my life, Bill. We've been married for 28 years. We have 2 adult children, Rachel and Scott. I'm a 5th grade teacher and teach in public school. I also have 2 cats, Lucy and Joey. I call them "the girls". The kids say I love the girls more than I love them. I scrapbook and read a ton. I love spending every moment of my free time in the summer months on our 34ft. boat up in Door County, WI.

Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Enlisted
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Needed to learn more about it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
Be patient...things will happen in their own time and worrying about them will not make them happen faster. Tell your sailor how proud you are of them every day and how much you love them. Support them unconditionally in their decisions. It may not be what you'd do but give them the support they need.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

Jill, I forgot to mention that we worked all last week on getting Daanen's flight schedule for Xmas. Finally got a one way to Chicago for $100 for Dec 18th. He leaves St Louis at 7:10 and arrives in Chicago at 8:30 which is perfect timing for Jamie & Greg to pick him up. They want him to stay at their place for a couple of days because their time is limited over Christmas with Greg's two families and us. We will pick him up either Saturday afternoon or Sunday depending what the weather predicts. Then we found him a one way back from Green Bay to St Louis early evening on Friday Jan. 1st for $160. He doesn't have to be back until midnight on Saturday but then the prices were a lot more and he would have to leave early, early morning. So we picked Friday. He will spend the night at the airport in the USO lounge & then get picked up on Saturday afternoon by bus to go back to Ft. Leonard Wood. The USO lounge has food, tv, couchs & cots for them to sleep on. He says it is really nice. Chicago airport's USO lounge doesn't have the cots so its a little nicer at St Louis airport. Mick called the airlines directly to see if they had it cheaper & with a discount for military for one way. It was somewhere around $300 & something. He told the airlines that he can get it much cheaper on line and they told him that it usually always is. So I can't complain for what our cost is. We did the leg work for Daanen because he doesn't have a computor and if he uses one at a cafe it costs $4.00 for 20 minutes. Heck, Mick was on for hours & hours trying to get the best prices. -Becky-

Hi Jill. Was looking at your photos, boy does Scott look like Bill. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. Lucky you, first time having Thanksgiving in 25 years. This is my first Thanksgiving w/o any kids and I won't have to cook, but Mick wants a turkey. He loves the left overs, so we're doing a small dinner. I'm leaving most of the cooking up to him. Jamie & Greg are on their honeymoon in Costa Rica and of course Daanen is in MO at "A" school. My sister & her husband are in Branson so they are stopping to have dinner with Daanen on Thanksgiving. That will be wonderful that he won't spend it w/o family, but my nose is out of joint because I can't be there. We thought about it, but Mick has to play music up in Sturgeon Bay on Friday night. He will be home 2 weeks at Christmas. After "A" school he heads directly to Gulf Port, MS for a month of combat training. He is hoping to remain there for his home base. He thinks he will be deployed before next Sept. Oh Boy, not looking forward to that. Is there any chance that Scott will be deployed anywhere & if so, when? More Later -Becky-

Hi Jill, I could kick myself over & over again. I don't know why we didn't go to the airport and sit with him until his flight left. It had crossed my mind but then I thought, how are we going to find him. It wasn't until after, that I thought about arranging to be at the airport at 3 am & then having him call our cell phone from a pay phone to pick a place to meet. We could have had about 6 more hours with him and he wouldn't have had to be alone. Can't believe I screwed that time up to be with him. He couldn't take his cell phone so I'll have to ship it to him when I get an address. Still haven't heard from him since his arrival in MO. Hope he calls soon. I'm getting anxious. Saw Bill on TV last night with Channel 11. They were interviewing him about the H1N1 vaccines. Loved your family photos. Won't have either one of the kids home for Thanksgiving this year. Jamie & Greg will be on their honeymoon in Costa Rica. So I'm not looking forward to Thanksgiving. It will be a lonely one. I guess we'll have to do what my brother-in-law does with his kids from a previous marriage. He combines the two and has a "Thankmas" between the holidays. Daanen may try to take the New Years weekend to come home instead of Xmas because of Jamie's schedule. She'll be able to spend more time with him on that weekend. Greg has two families because his parents are divorced. It is so difficult for them to split their time with 3 families and when they do, its very little time at each place & very stressful. If Daanen comes home on New Years weekend then they will be with us only that weekend. Take Care & talk to you soon. -Becky-

Hi Jill, Thought about calling you when we were going through Neenah Sunday afternoon, but I was exhausted & not feeling well. I decided I would write you this week instead. We came back yesterday (Saturday) instead of going to Jamie & Greg's in Chicago. We were all tired. I started coming down with a cold on Thursday & kept fighting it. What an emotional weekend. It was impressive, heartwarming, awesome, emotional & tear jerking. Especially the moment when I embraced him for the first time in 8 weeks. We only had Friday with him & then took him back at 7:45. We sat in the car until 8:15. His division had liberty until 9. It was not easy saying good-bye & I didn't hold up very well. He left on the bus for O'Hare at 1:00 a.m. because several from his division were leaving at about 3 a.m. His flight didn't leave until 10:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Had lay overs & wasn't expected to arrive in MO until 7ish Sunday night. He was dragging. When he boarded the plane in Chicago, the captain of the flight shook his hand and then he was escorted to first class seats (not what was on his ticket). When he told me that I got goosebumps & tears. Early Sunday morning I said to Mick, "Why didn't we go to the airport to sit with Daanen all night." Daanen said it in passing, but at the time I thought, "how are we going to find him with not having a cell phone." Never entered my mind to tell him to call us from a pay phone at 3:00 & we would plan to be at the airport at that time & then find a spot to meet. By the time I thought of it, we had already lost most of time we would have had together. I could kick myself over & over. A part of me was hoping he would get some sleep, but that didn't happen either. The USO has a separate lounge area at O'Hare for all military personnel to use. Has couches & chairs, flat screen TV & all the food you want while waiting for your next flight. Thought that was really great. Can't believe its over with. It's been a roller coaster for the last 2 months. Hope it gets better. Will write more soon. Right now I need to get to bed and get over this cold. Thanks for writing & for your support through all of this. Love Becky

Jill, Do you remember how far of a walk it was from the parking lot to the bldg where PIR is? We are actually taking the shuttle from the Residence Inn so i don't know how close they can get to the bldg and if it is about the same distance. I'm concerned because if it is cold out and I walk a great distance, my asthma will kick up, not to mention by bad knees will act up if it is quite a hike. If there is a distance do you know who I can contact about getting some assistance to the bldg?
I know you are leaving sometime this week to see Scott. Have a great, great time.
Love Beck

Hi Jill,
I wrote you several days ago but not sure if you got it. I had something returned to me, but it just said, Navy for Moms, so I'm not sure if it was the one to you. Anyway, we won't be going to SP for the meet & greet due to being down in GL. What a great experience for all of you to tour the White House. What an honor. Is Rachael going with you? Give our love & and a hug to Scott and thank him for us for serving our country. I hope to meet him someday soon. Have a great trip. Love Ya -Becky-

Jill, I looked for the group that you said was getting together Friday evening of PIR but wasn't able to find anything. I clicked on Groups and then clicked on the PIR date of 11/6/09. From there I'm lost and not sure where you found it. Can you walk me through where you located it. Thanks Becky

Hi Jill, Sorry to hear you have been sick. We went down to Jamie's in Chicago last Thursday. Weren't sure if we were able to go the last minute. Mick had problems at work that had to be resolved before we left. Got to leave around 11:00 am. On Sat. our son-n-law got a call from home that his brother-n-law was killed Friday night. Everything was up in arms as to whether we should stay or leave. After finding out the arrangements we ended up staying. The kids are heading home today for the service tonight, which we have to drive down to Oshkosh for. We just came back from Chicago yesterday. When we got home we found out a good friend of ours fell off a ladder two stories up and broke both of her shoulders. She had a 5 hour surgery yesterday and won't be able to feed herself, dress herself or do personal care for 3 weeks. Needs someone to help her with bathroom duties as well. Her arms will be immoble. I just can't imagine that. Anyway I will check out the N4M and the get together planned on Friday night. I checked once several weeks back but didn't see anything. Jill, can you tell me if everyone dresses up for the graduation or is it whatever your comfortable wearing? Do they allow jeans? Jamie was asking me and I didn't really know. We are thinking of taking the shuttle from the Residence Inn to the graduation. Sounds like it will be a lot less hectic than driving there that morning. Thanks for the updated info. Have fun at the wedding. You can always go shopping to blow a few hours. -Becky-
