Waking up this morning, I smile. Twenty-four brand new hours are before me. I vow to live fully in each moment and to look at all beings with eyes of compassion.

Profile Information

About me:
I am the mother of two sons. Miles (23 yrs old) and Jesse (19 yrs old). Jim and I have been soul mates, and happily married, for 27 years.)

Interests: Living simply and peacefully: Art, sailing, cooking, reading, birth (I am a birth & postparteum doula), elder friends (I help elders keep independence and have a small business to help meet the need), spirituality ( I am a Unitarian Universalist who is inspired by, and respectful of, many faith traditions, we are all one family), I am a lifelong learner who remains open minded.
I am here to support or represent my:
Son/Daughter
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Enlisted
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was concerned or afraid
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
My youngest son enlisted in the Navy 2/09. He felt it was an opportunity which offered him some things which college did not. I am realizing that this was a good decision for him. It was hard at first - I am an Army vet myself - but so much has changed in the world since I served.
I am still a new Navy Mom. I am keeping an open mind so I can be supportive. My enthusiasm for the Navy has really grown as I have seen how my son has grown into this role! He is really loving his first duty station in Naples, Italy. On weekends he tours this beautiful country! He has excelled!
I am also pleased with the way President Obama is moving - it gives me great hope! He honors all the people of the world - a fantastic leader!

My children do not belong to me. They are their own people. Sometimes the best thing I can do for them is get the hell out of the way! I respect and love them both - what good people they are.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.
This is a BAHAI prayer a friend gave me - it has helped me through the years - I have carried it in my purse and used it when I worried about my boys:

God, Educate these children. These children are the plants of thine orchard, the flowers of thy meadow, the roses of thy garden. Let the rain fall upon them; let the sun of reality shine upon them with thy love. Let thy breeze refresh them in order that they may be trained, grow and develop, and appear in the utmost beauty.

I think that it can help people of all faiths - agnostics can do a little re-framing and it might work for them too - maybe it will help a few of you!

So many Young Men and Women are trained at Great Lakes - I feel like a minnow in a river full of other nice Mom, wife, GF minnows!
Well my baby minnow is Jesse. He is 6'4" or so - Chief calls him Sasquash because of his height. He came home from college in Dec. to tell me he was making this change in his life - in order to become more mature and disciplined. I said - "BS YOU WILL NOT!" He calmly said, "Mom I respect your thoughts and feelings under the circumstances especially, and will consider them, but this is right for me." The journey began! It is my journey too......he writes the most beautiful, funny, artistic letters. And he says my letters are, "better than food or sleep or ____ when he used to have that." HA! He is a very sweet, sensitive, strong individual. This collective group experience is making him grow in new ways. He did college in Spain instead of traditional High School - then on to UWM instead. He is a real individual (did I say that). He loves to speak Spanish and after a month long walk across Spain (Camino de Santiago pilgrimage) he said he will someday live in a simple/less materialistic village like he visited. He also ran with the bulls - glad I didn't know this at the time. He said, "Mom, I will never live a boring life." I am sure this is true. It has been fun! Oh the places he will go! And I am right behind him!
JESSE IS IN ITALY NOW - WHAT A GOOD EXPERIENCE HE HAS HAD SO FAR!

Jill I

Surprise - I slept through the night!

Sounds like a newborn babe right?
Well, I guess in some ways I am - the first night after Jesse flew to Italy I felt
fine when I went to bed, but I woke several times and then just gave up on sleep.
My body's reaction to knowing he was in a plane rushing to a far away place.
But last night I slept peacefully and solidly - I realized this morning that just because I
am 51 years old doesn't mean I am not a babe in the woods-------what a great adventure
this new (empty nest) stage in my life is! He… Continue

No, I don't get to Wisconsin much. There is this great big puddle of water in the way! For being so close. It is a very long drive, especially being in Traverse City in the middle.
Yes, it would be fun to come to a reunion. If it is in the summer, I could take the ferry. I've never done that before.

hello, I was reading some of the comments in your liberal group, and sure hope you don't make it private. As an independent, I really like to listen and read all opinions and then make up my own mind. I enjoy reading through your groups pages, from time to time.
There seem to be as many nuts on the far far left, as there are on the far far right, ( ok... the far right are a little nuttier, IMO, LOL) But the good thing is, there wouldn't be so much conversation if people didn't care so much for our country, right?
The problem is, where blogging is a good way to vent, and share important info, it really does nothing to help, or hurt anyone. Changes and decisions are made by the folks that show up! May I suggest you look into a group called, Rock the Vote?
I think it would go along with what you ladies seem to feel. A way to actively make a difference. If nothing else, I think you would enjoy the website.
I make it a point to watch The Fox report ( Shep Smith has made his reputation on reporting the news...period), and also Anderson Cooper on CNN. This way I get a clearer picture of whats actually going on, ( and isn't that sad), instead of being spoon feed any one elses single ideas.
any , congrats on a really thought provoking group, and please, don't close your door. Who cares what the other group say? I have had dealings with a few of those woman, and seriously, they are angry woman, that get there info from only one kind of place, or each other. If they are reading other groups ideas, perhaps you can change even one mind! Thanks for your time, Mimi
