Yes, As far as the Navy, unless she were going straight to the Navy Band in Washington DC, then there's little competitiveness, in fact many high school bands are better musicians. (my opinion as a musician). Make sure she understands that she will…

Danielle auditioned before she went to boot camp. Her recruiter took her to Great Lakes for her audition. I think no matter where they audition, the scores and notes are all sent to Tennessee where they are reviewed and determined if they can be an MU (Musician)

Hi Karen, my daughter is a musician in the Navy Seventh Fleet band, Yokosuka, Japan. She's been in for a year. Her recruiter said she was the first person he ever took to a music audition and when she was at MEPS, they also commented that they don't get too many MU's through there, she was only like the third in 18 years that the person had seen in the time she had worked there. The bands themselves are not very big - the one Danielle is in has about 35-40 sailors but they are split into two bands - The Far East Edition and the Orient Express. She does a lot of the Change of Command ceremonies and will be on tour this fall. As for competitiveness, I didn't hear Danielle talk too much about it. Even when you audition, it's not against other sailors, it's based on your own skill levels. Some band do require that you audition for them, like the one she is currently in. Is she going in as an MU for sure? When Danielle originally took her oath of intent, she was listed as a big equipment operator - helping to load ships, etc. I laughed and asked if they had ever seen her drive. She is only 5'1" so not much bigger than your daughter. Her real passion was the band so she auditioned for that after her oath and once she passed her audition, she was able to change her job to a musician. That is all she does now. - Kathy

My daughter has been in for nearly 5 years. I went to the hotel with her the night before she left. We live near Richmond, VA and everything (hotel & MEPS) is in Richmond so it was easy to spend the time with her there.

Be sure you attend her swearing in if you're able to. And, remember your camera. Get in the habit of taking it everywhere -- you definitely don't want to miss a picture of her because even now, 5 years later, it all still seems important.

Plan to write to her everyday, the minute she leaves. Or, maybe it will help you with your feelings to start writing letters now. I numbered my letters because I didn't have her mailing address for a while. When she received them, she knew what order to read them in. Writing to her was my therapy for missing her. I cried a lot -- but I never let her know that in my letters. Some days I still cry -- especially after I've talked to her. She's been on the other side of the earth for the past 18 months -- I saw her for 5 weeks in May -- but I still miss her when I hang up the phone.

You'll make it through this -- we all have! When she graduates from boot camp, (be sure to attend that too), you'll be so amazed at what a transformation she's undergone. And, you'll be crying there too.

It's a wonderful experience and they have such marvelous opportunities too. Be positive, encourage her, help her, enjoy her, and visit her whenever you have a chance. I try to learn everything I can -- it helps me feel like I'm a small part of her Navy life.
