We got hit last night with about 4-5 inches of wet heavy snow. I just got back in from clearing the driveway. Thank God for SNOWBLOWERS. I had to get it cleared, as the contracter is coming this morning to put the tile on the bathroom floors (provid…

Michelle, Josh's pictures are going to be mailed here. I think he did that because he doesn't have his own address yet and the fact that his mother would kill him if she didn't get to see them FIRST. Donna, what ship will Matthew be going out on?…

With Josh spending so much time with his girlfriend (whom we absolutely adore by the way) reminds me of a coaching story. When I was coaching, during the girls season I would tell them that boys were the enemy and to stay away from them until the s…

Hi Mike,

Loved your photos! How lucky are you to have Josh at home for a while!? And his trip sounds great; maybe he'd like to take me with him! Notsomuch, probably!

Chad is adjusting to life in Va Beach. NIOBC (Intel death-by-powerpoint) is holding his interest and the Navy is actively working on his security clearance. I was interviewed last week and Madelaine reported that they were at his high school as well, interviewing teachers. It was a bit intimidating, to say the least! He had plans to come home on Dec 19th, as did other 02 Intels, but their plans changed quickly when they were ordered to stay within a 300 mile radius of NMITC until 1600 on the 22nd. They all found that to be very frustrating but I understand that that's how things work in the Navy. Things change on the fly!

Madelaine's high school season started the week before Thankgiving too. They've had one relay meet and they have a district quad this Friday. Shes' doing fine for taking the summer off and switching to a less competitive team. Her 100 free is 59:99 (thank goodness!), 200 is 2:08:?? and her 500 is 5:48:??. If she wants state cuts she's going to have to start pushing more but it's completely up to her. I'm just glad she's having FUN with swimming again!

Happy holidays to you and your family!

Julie

Your photos are so neat! Really enjoyed seeing them. Can't wait to meet Josh once he makes it to Charleston. If he meets Jared at OHARP then I'll make sure all those boys are fed. :)

Congratulations to you and your new Ensign! I know how very proud you are right now! Looking forward to reading all about your trip and seeing pics! Will Josh be doing OHARP prior to classing up?
Chad is still here in St. Louis, doing OHARP, and getting ready to head to Virginia Beach on Friday. As much as I love having him home, I realize he's ready to get on with his schooling and his career. I just hate goodbyes...

I did graduate with her. My mom, Mrs. Corwin was teaching math a couple years before I got to Kimball. I remember Pat. Tell her I said "Hi". Gail

Graduated in '74, also a swimmer, as was my brother '76. Also swam for RO Penguins thru HS. My mom taught math at both Dondero and Kimball. Not sure when she started at KHS, probably about the time you graduated??? I was in orchestra and my brother was also in band. Remember Mr. Pugh?? We're really good friends still w/ his wife, daughter and daughter's son (now at RO HS too). Why they picked Ravens, I'll never understand. Too Edgar Allen Poe for me.

Currently he is scheduled for the Jan. Charleston school. While in Mystic, we visited the Groton Sub base (been there many times while living out there) with a CO friend. Amazing changes in the past 15 years. We are non-military, but living so close to the sub base we saw friend's subs leave and return when the children were little. Quite emotional for me, since I was close to the wives and children of the sub guys, our church was mostly Navy and Coast Guard families, and our children's' best friends were often Navy too. The Coast Guard Acad. is across from the river too-so lots to see.

Hey--I grew up in RO--Kimball HS. !! Then on to MSU. Left MI in '81 (recession/job thing) and returned a few yeas ago. Yes--we're the Caramel Apple family:) Thanks for getting back to me. Have a safe trip to Newport, and Congrats for your son (and his parents too). My new Ensign and I spent the week after grad. in Mystic, CT where we lived for 10 years (pre-school-elem.). Saw lots of friends and enjoyed the peaceful New England Fall colors, and slower pace of life. If you're driving, and have a few extra minutes, take a detour thru Mystic (especially downtown (Rt. 1) where the last Bascule Bridge is still operating (every 1/4, and 3/4 hour). Amazing restaurants too. We lived about a mile from the "water" (ocean), could walk to the Seaport and downtown, etc. Was fun to see the old neighborhood all grown up w/ mature trees--that house was the 1st of 3 houses we've built while relocating around the country. Enjoy Newport and Graduation!!!

Hi Mike and Katie,

Sorry for getting back to you so late, I JUST saw the comment you posted on my page! The sword honor is for the top 10% (or so) of the class. Although most of the class will have sword drill much the same way everybody learns rifle drill, at graduation the top 10% (usually four or so) will wield swords instead and stand at the front of formation (I think out from the class a little bit). I'm not sure what exactly contributes to this ranking, but it's at least partially academic.

Hope that's helpful! :o)

Mike,
Our situation is much better than what you described. The HS coach does not know Allie's year round coach but her deal is this....she must attend one HS practice a week and can replace HS practices with yr round practices the other times. She cannot however just not show up at either. The HS coach knows that she gets a more intense practice with yr round than at the HS so that is why she is ok with it. In Charlotte, there are about 6 year round programs and none through the YMCA. All are well known and produce excellent swimmers. They encourage yr round to swim hs....good advertising! All are USA swimming sanctioned as far as I know. I really only know about 3 programs personally.....MAC (Mecklenburg Aquatics Club) is by far the largest and most well known. Allie used to swim there and we liked it but it is BIG and not much personal attention unless you are considered an elite swimmer. They sent swimmers to Bejing!! Several won GOLD! Cullen Jones and Ricky Berens being two that I can think of. Now she swims at NSS (New South Swimming). Much smaller team and more personal attention. We like it a lot. The yr round coach knows all these kids swim hs and I guess he is ok with it, he's never said. If there is a conflict....we would do HS. It works out for us that the practice she attends for hs is on a day that she doesn't have yr round practice....well there is one she can attend but is not required so she has never been to it. It seems to work out fine here. Thanks for asking. Good news....well sorta....the meet she was going to miss is being rescheduled so she won't miss it. (Good for us)
