My YN2(SW) daughter has been named Junior Sailor of the Quarter at the Naval-Support-Facility-That-Must-Not-Be-Named. In making the announcement, the CO also named her as being his next secretary. Bravo Zulu, Pooh Bear! Emma

One more thing I learned last night.... When the CO informed my YN2 daughter of the good news, he tossed in that she will be moving out to the front office as his secretary when that position opens up in the near future.

Congrats on her award, its a special Christmas present to both of you. Enjoy your sailors visit.

Officials seek man who may have info in sailor's death

http://www.pnj.com/article/200912111958/NEWS01/91211014

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help to find a man who may have information about the Nov. 12 murder of Navy sailor Tyler Jefferson.

Sheriff’s investigator Curtis Cephas said deputies are looking for a black man with a beard and mustache. He is described as thin — about 155 pounds — and is 5 feet 11 inches to 6 feet tall. The man was last… Continue

So You Want To Be A Yeoman.....

In an earlier blog, Helen said:

“It is great to hear that your daughter is doing so well. My son was disqualified from AO due to no depth perception and thinks he will become a Yeoman. I would love to share with him the opportunities that he might have!!! This might help him a lot.”

Ok. Let’s start with the YN job description: Yeomen perform administrative and clerical work. They receive visitors, answer telephone calls and sort incoming mail. They type, organize files and operate modern offic… Continue

More (OPSEC) News

My daughter, (OPSEC), currently serving at The-Naval-Support-Facility-That-Must-Not-Be-Named as (OPSEC) Yeoman, was recently invited to attend a (OPSEC) seminar at the (OPSEC). YES, THE REAL ONE-AND-ONLY (OPSEC)!! She has made trips there before, but they were brief visits, usually just to deliver and pick up (OPSEC). This was an opportunity to mingle with the varsity team.

Most of the attendees of the seminar were senior civilian and career military professionals. Since the dress code was civi… Continue

Did You Have A Friend On The Good Reuben James?

In the early morning hours of October 31, 1941, more that a month before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the USS Reuben James (DD-245) became the first US warship sunk in World War II when torpedoed by a German U-Boat while on a neutrality patrol in the North Atlantic. Of the 159 sailors aboard, 115 died.

Thank you so much for all the information!!! I am going to print this out and send it to my son. At least that will give him a lot to know what to expect and what is possible. Can you tell me where your daughter went to "A" School? I thought he said Mississippi.

Would it be prying to ask why you have chosen "Lady Hamilton" as your name? I have read about her and am wondering if there is some symbolism or some characteristic you admire or emulate?

It is strange that it vanished completely. I can see signs of an emergency of some criticism of the recruiting process - nothing we haven't heard before. This young man obviously had some serious issues right now. She might have deleted the discussion herself. Towards to end, she indicated there were other issues involved. I sincerely hope she and her son find a resolution to their problem. My son would skin me alive if I had put out that post but then my son is probably more "military in the traditional sense" - you know - stiff upper lip, suck it up, keep your commitment. The military should do a better job of informing the recruits what being in the Navy is all about. It hard work. It's a hard life. It can be tremendously rewarding but it comes with a price.
Regards, B.

I deleted my post on the Genie's discussion. I was trying to be supportive but realistic. Unfortunately, Linda found some of my comments objectionable and thought I should apologize. Well, I wasn't going to. Your comment about another sailor having to pick up the slack is right on. Everybody on a boat hates guys who can't/won't do their share of the work (regardless of the reason). I believe some of the moms have gotten carried away emotionally with their fears. You and I aren't going to be too popular in discussion groups like that. I am glad that there are other moms who share my views.
