Ruth, I wish I had checked my email earlier. I wil send my son an email, he may not reply in enough time though. He lived on Base for over a year so he may know of something. I know Gurnee Mall is right there, tons of stuff to do in the area. If ...

From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
To be very supportive, always send lots of letters and packages when deployed and do what I can for his fellow shipmates, some of them receive nothing.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
This was the best decision he/she could have made

How wonderful you're going to Houston to see that baby! Too bad I'll just be passing through. We packed about 165 boxes last Sunday with the Marine Moms, plus two banks are preparing boxes. I'm thinking Valentines Day might be the time for more. Thanks for asking. The Purple Heart? He hit an IED last May. His knees are permanently damaged and though he can pass PT, he's in pain most of the time. The Navy doc at GL says he'll sign off on it, but there's some paper he needs from the Army. It's a quagmire of lost paperwork between the Army and the Navy. We just want to make sure he'll have care when he gets out of the Navy someday.

I, too, have been so busy I haven't been here for awhile. My dad broke his femur in the hip area, but is on the mend after surgery at the VA last month. Yesterday he insisted on standing from his wheelchair during the National Anthem. I got to be his confirmation sponsor in September--at age 88 he became a Catholic! We're still working on getting Andy his Purple Heart. It seems it's a paperwork problem between the Army and the Navy. The fun stuff--I'm Andy's oldest's Brownie leader and also take both girls to dance classes now. Next week though I leave for Houston to visit my brother, then drive to Tucson to meet my husband at his mom's for Thanksgiving. He and I will go back to our winter home in Texas till mid December when we come home for Christmas, then back to Texas. Politics (Ft. Hood and Afghanistan) make me sick! Hope all is well with you and yours. (When I get to Texas I'll have more time for the internet!)

Thanks for asking! We took the granddaughters to Tucson for three weeks, visiting the Kansas City highland games and Pike's Peak on the way. Their dad's leave started a week after we left, and he was able to join us for some of the visit to grandma's house in Tucson. We had a wonderful time with family there! Came home and volunteered for the John Deere Golf Classic for about a week and a half. Next week I'm a volunteer in the Honor Flight office here. Always something going on! The son seems to be doing well. He adopted a part chihuahua in Dallas on his way home that he named Tex, so he's not alone now! How are you doing? Your sailors?

Welcome Laura, I did not realize that you just joined AECF group! Love to hear more about your FC. Ours is close to wrapping up C school and just got orders to a ship out of Hawaii. This same sailor was born in Japan...where his dad was an FC for 10 years. We had great fun during our Navy days and only hope that our son enjoys it as well. May I ask where your son is stationed and which system is he working with?

Laura ,
My son owns the Tap House Grille. The one in Glen Ellyn is run by the franchise but if you will just deviate your meeting to the Tap House grille in Westmont(about 8 miles away) I can guarantee you a BETTER visit. My son will meet you at either one but since he owns the one in Westmont outright you visit we be MUCH more enjoyable....Debi Patragas(I notified Ruth Davis of this info)

Hi Laura: I ordered some very recently from scrapbookerscloset.com very reasonable I thought..I had seen a 12 x 12 pad of pages at a local store for about $16.00 and found them on here for $7.99 so I ordered 2! they came and are very nice. Also creativeimaginations.com search military instead of Navy for a better selection on both sites. My daughter has been in for 6 1/2 years and was given two Navy scrapbooks a very long time ago and decided this is the year I'm going to do them. I'm going hopefully to see a friend who has been doing scrapbooking for a long time to help me get started, I have rubber stamped for several years and this will be my first scrapbook project. I have already started collecting pictures I want to use on a file on my computer so I can save them to a cd for when I'm ready to go get them printed.
Good Luck
Kathy

Did Jon send the fabric yet??????

Did Jon get the fabric out to the post office? Did he tell you what color it is? What would really be way cool is if it matched my couch, and my favorite, beautiful, smart, funny, generous sister would be willing to share some with me for a few new covers for my couch throw pillows. Oh, and by the way, you'd have to make the covers too since I'm not nearly as talented and smart as you. That way, I too (Jon's favorite aunt) would have a piece of my favorite nephews Naval history in my livingroom.
I'm going to bring up Valentines day at our event on the 24th.

I read on Diane's page that your son is on the Chancellorsville? That was my son's first assignment! He was on the Chancellorsville when it was ported in Yokosuko, Japan for about a year. Then they did a crew swap with the Shiloh, and the Chancellorsville headed to San Diego. I guess that's where it's home port is still?
