Yes, As far as the Navy, unless she were going straight to the Navy Band in Washington DC, then there's little competitiveness, in fact many high school bands are better musicians. (my opinion as a musician). Make sure she understands that she wil...

That's funny! Shin is a great guy. I'm glad to hear Danielle is enjoying it so far. She will eat all kinds of strange and new things! It's probably hard for the guys to play and still take pictures. I know many wish they had recordings too. Lori

About me:
I am a proud daughter, Wife and Mother of Navy men. I am mom to 2 daughters and 1 son.
Their success is my dream. I have been fortunate. I watched them grow, attended all their games, concerts, school trips and continue to watch them find and fullfill their dreams. I couldn't be more proud. Being their mom means so much to me. As for being a Navy mom, I am most proud of my son's ability to stay true to himself. Despite many moments where his duty forced him to perform against his morals and values and after witnessing many good people get caught up in the power that comes with rank, he has never forgotten who he is. Tim is Tim. He is kind, thoughtful, loving, generous and would treat you with respect no matter what rank was on his sleeve. I am honored and proud to be his mom.
I am here to support or represent my:

Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?

When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was concerned or afraid, Needed to learn more about it, Was proud
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
that change happens, sometimes too soon and sometimes too much at once. I learned that when my son left, he was as concerned about me as I was about him; that my success is his dream too. I learned that although nobody will ever love him like me, the military has taught him things I couldn't have and he is better for it.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
This was a maturing experience

Hi Lori, we've had lots of fun having Danielle the last few weeks - she leaves this Thursday. Got her belongings packed up and picked up last week. She's been visiting her former bands at the school and symphony, plus her college professor that worked with her the last few years. I heard the band was going to be on a tour when she arrives but she was given the name of another MU that will be meeting her at Yokosuka. Hopefully the period between getting off the plane and to the shuttle will be uneventful for her. As a mom I wish I could be there to help her but she doesn't seem too concerned about it. I just remember my first flight alone to a foreign country. I did find another mom who's son will arrive the day before or after Danielle so we wondered if they would be in-processing together. Her boyfriend is here visiting before he heads to AZ to see his family and then he is off to join the band in Naples, Italy. I think we've managed to get in all her favorite places in the area and eat her favorite foods. I'll have to go on a diet after she leaves!

Hi Lori, we had a few days around 60 and today it's snowing - not much accumulation but the crocuses that were blooming are probably wondering why they came out already. We'll be leaving early Thursday to get Danielle - can't wait to see her and bring her home for a few weeks. I try not to have every minute planned because I know she has her own plans to see friends and do things. While I'm excited knowing she's coming home, I know 3 weeks later she heads to Japan and that will be a whole new experience. I'm glad we've been able to ask you and Tim questions. We'll find out this week what day she flies and out of where and when they'll pack her up from here. I hope it's not too soon when she gets here so she has time to go through some of her things again. Kathy

The barrack info is great because Nina lives off base so she wasn't sure how to answer some of Danielle's questions about the barrack living. I'll pass on a few more things to her. I work on our family genealogy and my husband's family was in Vermont back in the early 1800's :) The moved to NY for a bit and then onto MI in the 1850's. We have a small town about 10 miles from where I grew up called Vermontville and they have a maple syrup festival every year. When I was talking to Danielle about where she wanted to go next she said well...I thought about such and such and then .....I said, can you give our pocketbooks just a little break and pick someplace that we can actually drive too :) Then I told her later - you know what, that was a bit selfish of me, I want you to go wherever your heart desires and we will see you one way or another, I don't want to hold you back! I can say we have done quite a bit of traveling over the last 4-5 years as our kids joined the military. We've been to Texas, California, Maryland as well as seeing Danielle at Little Creek in Virginia. That's good to know about the passports too - so if she has leave orders to come home or go wherever for a visit she is ok then with the military passport. I didn't want her to get over there and then find out she had to have one and not get it in time to come back in December. She heard that they usually have a few weeks leaves at Christmas and after the 4th of July - is this about the time he comes to visit? Sorry I keep thinking of more to ask but it's nice to hear some answers, before she goes over. Thanks for answering my questions! I'm sure as the days get closer to her leaving there will be more :)

Danielle should find out this coming week when she flies over to Japan - she was planning on a 3 week leave before heading over there and she finishes at Little Creek on April 3rd - so we are thinking the last week of April she should be going over. At Little Creek there is a kitchen area but it's on one of the floors with male students and the females are not allowed to use it. She has a full size fridge and microwave in her room right now - rooms sound about the same - two people share a room and then have a bathroom to share. We already use Skype. I had read about it in the Japan mom's group and we downloaded it at Christmas time. It's great especially for my almost 3 year old granddaughter. She loves to talk to Danielle and be able to see her. Does your son have to pay for the internet over there or is it like Little Creek? Danielle can access it for free in the barracks so she that's nice. Oh I thought of one more question - Nina told Danielle she needs to have a military passport as well as a civilian one if she plans on traveling back to the states or other places for a vacation. Does your son have two passports or has he just stayed in Japan the whole time? Danielle is hoping to come home at Christmas and then the following July we hope to meet her in Hawaii for a vacation. We priced the trip to Japan and the flight costs are crazy - while Hawaii isn't cheap either it's cheaper than Japan! She may be ready by then for a little break from Japan too :) Does your son know where he's heading next after Japan? Danielle is already talking about where she'll want to go after two years in Japan. I said "closer to home so we can see you in a concert!"

'm on the phone now with Danielle, she said "they know about me already?" That's pretty cool. Since you said to bring pots and pans, are there cooking facilities at the barracks or in the rooms? This is great that she can ask questions to people already over there. How often does your son go out to different places and how long is he gone? I see the band was in the Philippines in February. I've been watching for pictures and news online :)
Danielle did her first audition the February before her graduation and was told she needed to work on her sax playing and to come back in 3-4 months after she worked with a private teacher. We bought her a new sax for graduation and hired the college professor here in town to work with her. She went back right after graduation and auditioned the second time and they said she had improved so much and showed them she was serious that they let her through. She had to pass with all three instruments. She was told she was only the second recruit in the history of Great Lakes PIR'S to play a piccolo solo during PIR -she did it in Stars and Stripes. The flute is her main instrument but sounds like she'll be playing her sax quite a bit. She was involved in every band she could be at school, plus the honor bands and four years of the Junior Symphony. This is definitely a great experience for our kids!

I talked with Danielle a little bit ago and told her about taking a bike over - it is Nina that she has been emailing too. Since Nina is married and lives off base, she wasn't sure how the barracks will be for Danielle. It doesn't look like other than Nina there are any other females?? Did it take long for your son's stuff to get over there? Danielle is wondering if she should take her tenor sax over on the plane with her or let it get shipped over - since we weren't sure how long it was going to take, she thought about carrying it with her. Did your son already have a degree in music? Danielle went into the Navy right out of high school - she turned 18 just a few days before her PIR. She's had alot of people ask to see her id to see if she really is only 18. I knew when she was in high school she was going to find a job with music, it is a big big part of her life. Out of my three kids, she is my biggest band nerd and she is proud of it. I have two daughters and a son, only Brandon at home now and he's a freshmen in high school. I'm sure with two older sisters that went into the military - oldest went in the Air Force, he will probably do the same thing, but he's not sure which branch yet - part of me wouldn't mind either one since we've experienced both and my husband was Army when we were first married.

Thanks for the heads up - I will tell Danielle what you said - she has alot of kitchen stuff already so she was planning on taking it - even bought a little toaster oven she uses at Little Creek. She does love to bake. She heard about riding bikes so I may suggest she buys one here and ships it over. She heard it was a bit of a hike from the barracks to where they practice. Does your son ever drive over there? She didn't know if she would be able to drive, just on base? She doesn't have a car but thought about getting one there if it wasn't too expensive. We're hoping to have all her things packed up and shipped from here.

Hi Lori, Danielle plays flute, piccolo and tenor sax. She'll be living in the barracks. While at boot camp she was told she'd go to Jacksonville after Little Creek but one of her instructors encouraged her to try out for the Seventh Fleet Band and she made it. We should find out next week when and where she flies out of to head over. She's already been emailing the soloist from over there.
