Enlisted
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud, Encouraged him/her
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
it moves on Navy time , not mine. Which means I hate not knowing when I will get a call or letter.....
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
Our relationship has grown stronger, This was a maturing experience, The Navy has a lot to offer, This was the best decision he/she could have made

James is EM/FN (I think, that's the last he told me...) He has a huge test on Monday so now he's not going to come home for our birthdays this weekend... Sarah is going to see him for the weekend instead. I have to remember to look at nuke moms and order him a cake...

Congrats to Sal and Kimberlie....

Hi Louann,
Very few enlisted nucs go into the Navy with a degree, so it's highly unlikely you'll get any "yes" responses. Your son should be getting a lot of information on his end, but if he has a solid math and science background, he should seriously consider it. Nuc officers go to their own version of Power School; a lot of the material is the same, but they go into more depth on a lot of stuff, so they have to work harder. They go through prototype training side by side with enlisted nucs for most stuff, but again get more, since they get familiar with all of the enlisted watchstations, EM, ET, MM and ELT - plus they qualify Engineering Officer of the Watch. If they are going subs, they also go to Officer's Sub School, something enlisted nucs don't do. The benefits of being an officer are; they are paid nearly twice the enlisted, they don't do any of the "grunt" work, on subs they do everything on the boat, not just the nuc stuff, and they are even more employable after they finish their Navy time. The service obligation is about the same as the enlisted nucs. Again, if he has a solid college background in math and science (including calculus), and he isn't struggling at all with the enlisted curriculum at this point, he should give it VERY serious consideration.

Hi Louann: My son is almost exactly one year ahead of your son. He left for BC Nov. 18, 2007 and arrived in Charleston around the 20th of January. Did you go to BC graduation? It's a cold place in January. It was a high of -3 when we were there. Our son is at Goose Creek and graduates Feb. 13 and will stay in Charleston for the last 6 months of school. He also graduated from college and is older than most of the other guys. He has mentioned officer school on and off as he is not sure he wants to stay in as a career. Is your son thinking about this route? I would guess because he is a college graduate and probably more mature than many of the other sailors that they would think he would make a good officer. Being in Florida, Charleston will be a nice place to visit him. I'm sure you miss him alot. Our son will be home for two weeks next week after graduation. We are not going to the graduation, but this way he can head home right after the graduation. He actually got married over Christmas to his girlfriend of 4 years so hopefully this trip will be more relaxed than the one over Christmas! I hope your son likes his time in Charleston! It's definitely a different route than we had ever thought about. Welcome to Nuke Moms!
