About me:
I'm 48, Mother of 5 my eldest is my son Fred 19, and he's heading out to Great Lakes, Ill Nov. 12, 2008. I'm trying to be strong for his sake, but as we all know we are falling apart inside. He's always wanted to be in some branch of the military and chose the Navy. He's the first of his generation in my family that has joined the military. The first of our entire family to join the Navy. I have no idea what to expect from his bootcamp experience. I pray it goes well for him.
I am here to support or represent my:
Alfred (Fred)
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Enlisted
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud, Encouraged him/her
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
To give him all our support no matter what. I feel he needs to know that we are behind him no matter what happens.

Hi Marianne. My son is at CL. He graduated FMTB May 8 and is with 2/2- 2nd battalion/2nd Marine, Fox Company. He got exactly what he asked for, to be assigned to a Marine infantry unit. They are scheduled to be deployed this Nov. to Afghanistan. Do you know if your son wants to stay with the Marines after FMTB? I'd be lying if I told you I was happy about his assignment but we've raised our kids trying not to interfer with their career decisions. (My hubby and I spent too much time being unhappy by trying to do what our parents wanted, not what we really wanted). Anyway, he is very happy minus being seperated from his girlfriend. Don't hesitate to ask me any questions and if I can answer, I will. Oh- I told my son what happened with your son at the airport. He said he was advised not to wear a uniform during air travel and personally, he doesn't care for the attention that it draws. The marines are very strict with their uniforms--they aren't even allowed to wear their cammies into town.

Thanks, I am not sure what time my flight gets in. But hopefully my husband and I can make it. I am hoping Derek remembers to change the names for PIR but who knows with him. I talked to him yesterday and told him to but we will see. I am still going to call the recruiter and see what he can do.

Marianne, no phone call yet. Maybe his division hasn't gotten to make one yet. I've talked to his gf and his father and they haven't received one either. I'm so sorry to hear about your son. That makes me sad. But with their moms they are a little weaker than when they talk to others, so it's us for sure. Keep up the prayers and we will be there soon to give them that hug. We are proud of them no matter what, but it's the unknowing that's hard. This is where God teaches us patience - our kids. God bless you, Chris

Marianne, I noticed your son is in Ship 11, div 061. My son is in ship 11, div 062, also PIR on 1/9/09. This is exciting and yet tough on us moms, I know. I'm sure they'll do great. Hope to see you in GL on the 9th as long as they hang in there and pass all their tests and behave. Ha!

Marianne, you're welcome. Anything I can help you with just ask. Your job is to be relentlessly encouraging even though you're feeling awful about what they must be going through. Never let them hear you cry, tell them how proud you are of them, commiserate a little so they know you understand what they're going through but remind them that they're strong and worthy and will make a wonderful sailor at the end of boot camp. I promise you, both you and Fred will get through this and be all the stronger for it.

Hi Marianne...Oh yeah....do I know about the clothes in the box!! His shirt had his cologne on it still and I cried until I didn't think I could stop!! But I actually washed all his clothes in the laundry basket a few days later...I had to have my husband read your comment 'cuz I think he thought I was going around the bend until he read another mom's pain about the shirt!! I've actually gotten 2 calls and 2 letters since the 29th of Oct.from Marcus..1 of those calls was yesterday. He's had a headache for a week but I have to try and not worry. Of course my first instinct was to get in the car and start out for Great Lakes...LOL.we'll just have to see...he's still very homesick but sounded better than the call on the 15th...just remember you are not alone in any of this...we're here for you..keep in touch...

Hi Marianne:
My son will be in school in Pensecola, Florida for approx 1 year, then he goes to San Diego for 8 weeks. After that, we aren't sure. I know he wants to be somewhere warm. I think he would love San Diego. Plus, it would be much closer to me!!
