Yes.It is. So glad to hear good news!

My son said he thought they'd be in the shipyards until January at least, but maybe longer, up to a year.

Cathy, When I read your post, the flags were flying and the alarms were screaming. You're right. Getting married to have a house rather than live on the ship is--whew--not good. My son has lived on the Bush for over a year. He looks forward to gett…

Communication with mine varies. But one clue that something has changed for the positive is that usually when I ask him what he's been doing, he replies that work is just work and not much else going on, etc. Last time I talked to him, I asked him t…

Living on the ship must be stressful in the best of times, but moreso now that they are in the shipyards. My son and his buddies often get hotel rooms on the weekends just to get off the ship. How's that for a money-blowing practice? I would rather…

I am sitting here laughing because it has not been too long since I had the "I thought I put my insurance on automatic payment" lament. Sometimes they listen better when the advice/direction comes from someone else.

I am so sorry to hear about yet another one of our kids--good kids in honorable jobs--being robbed by the low-life Newport News miscreants. I don't know if it will make a difference, but please tell him that we all care and send our love to him.

Nancy, This site is great for letting you know you're not alone. If I had all of the money my boys have spent in overdraft charges (or that I talked the bank into letting go when the boys banked at our bank before the Navy), I'd be one wealthy woma…

Elizabeth--I think it makes a difference that it is just your son who is being targeted. I agree with Cindy, he needs to document everything--a nice, neat, well-organized record of what's happening, including the names of people who have witnessed t…

I think if there is one thing young sailors discover when they get into the fleet is that the politics of everyday life exist in the military, too. Eeeeccchhhh--how disappointing. :-(. However, depending on the details of your son's situation, this…

Oh my gosh. Course, it is not Rob's fault that the criminal element of Newport News targets sailors, whom they probably know keep belongings in their cars.It just breaks my heart when I think of all that this kid has been through in this past year.…

My Bush sailor wishes his experience could be a bit more like his brother's. In San Diego, if you are stationed on a ship, you live in barracks when you are in port. Sounds much nicer than living on the ship full time, ESPECIALLY in the shipyards :-…

Profile Information

About me:
I am the proud mother of two sailors. One son is stationed (and had the honor of being on the pre-commissioning crew) aboard the USS George H.W. Bush in Norfolk, VA; the other son is on the USS Pelelieu in San Diego. Both are Mass Communication Specialists. Both boys got some college credits under their belts first and wandered awhile before enlisting. The Navy has been an incredibly positive move for both of them.

My empty-nester status combined with my husband's long working hours have given me lots of quiet time to work on my doctoral dissertation in health psychology. We visit the boys when we can, have met their friends, and in the case of the eldest son, have met the people in his department on the Bush.

I am joining this site because I feel I have an investment in the Navy and am proud of all sailors. I want to join with other mothers in support of our kids and establish a connection with other women who share this common ground with me.
I am here to support or represent my:

When I heard “Navy,” I:
Needed to learn more about it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
1. Make sure your kids keep their eyes and ears open when visiting recruiters and sign nothing until they get the situation they want.

2. That basic training is incredibly effective at giving young adults a sense of self-efficacy, the importance of working together, instant insight into the types of recruits who do not wish to come together with them, and the desire to align themselves with people who are motivated to achieve..

3. At least at the Defense Information School, the training is excellent. I have a Bachelor's degree in communication and feel my sons have gotten as good or better training in six months than I got in four years.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

Cindy,

I love the Irish. Have always been pretty proud of that part of my heritage. Lately, I have been in touch with several people who either were themselves or had family, like my mother, in the Nazareth House orphanges. Pretty terrible places from what I have been told.

I am so sorry about your Harry. Loss seems to have a way of changing its form and feeling as time goes on. But know you have friends here. I lost my brother in September of 2008 in a tragic accident (a branch fell off a tree and hit him). I thought I was going along ok and then realized it would have been smarter for me to step back from a lot of the heavy duty responsibilities and things going on since: school, both boys going into the Navy within a year of each other, a tree falling on our house in March, all the construction, etc. So, I have just started a leave of absence from school, the house is fixed, and I am enjoying the solitude. Ian, my youngest, will be finsihing A school on June 26 and will be coming home for a visit after. I can't wait!

We live in Newnan, GA about 70 miles southwest of Snellville. Haven't been to Stone Mountain in a while, but always enjoy it. We are originally form Pennsylvania and really still think of it as home. Still have most of my family there.

See you here and on the forum,

Warm regards,
Maureen

Hi Maureen. I enjoy your posts as well. I am soooooo crunched for time these days that I do not get to pop in like I'd like to. Someday again, I hope.

Actually dear, my fam is from Ireland/Scotland but, from generations back. The talk I do here is mostly just playing and for fun but, I love it.
My Harry ( God rest his dear soul) family is from Dingle, County Kerry. He and I have been there 3 times and were planning another trip this fall, before he suddenly passed on. (God I miss him terribly!)
I have always had fun with the Irish side of things and tis obvious when coming into my house. I am getting a headstone with a Celtic cross on it for Harry, when the time comes. I will incorporate many Irish symbols that apply to him/us on it when it is made. A grand tribute to a grand man.

So, I see you are from Georgia. I have a sister & her fam that live in Snellville, which is 10 minutes or so from Stone Mountain. Where are you from that? Small world isn't it?

All the best then to you and your lads. I too am now an emptynester with Rob the youngest on the Bush. Very lonely these days with my Harry also gone. Helps me appreciate my friends here even more.

Hugs from here!

I spoke to my son Dan. He knows both your sons. He is working with your older one and knows the younger one from DINFOS. He said he gave your youngest many a ride at Fort Meade! I didn't ask where or why! He sounds like he's having a ball.

Colleen,

Happy Easter to you, too. Have a safe and fun trip. It will do you a world of good to see Zac, not to mention that it will be good for Zac, too.

I miss the boys--am kind of a reluctant empty-nester. I am happy and support the boys in creating their own lives, but miss seeing them regularly!

My best friend's (who lives in FL) husband races. She is often a racing widow.

Please give Zac our best.

Hi Maureen
I'm glad to hear that Ian is doing better. The weather here has been pretty cold, so I'm looking forward to the sunshine and warmth. We're going to fly down to see Zac. My husband is closing his shop for Friday and Monday so we can take a long weekend. Zac will be in school, but he'll have liberty on the weekend. I know he's a little home sick. First time he's ever been this far from home for this long. I know that I think about him all the time and wish he was still here. Rick and Ryan have been working on Ryan's race car, so they have not been home very often at all. They are gone every night until 10:00 or so. I know that they have been trying to get it done before we leave because racing starts May 1st. That'll be here before we know it.

Take care. Happy Easter.

Hi Maureen~

Great to hear from you! We were so glad that we had the opportunity to met you, Steve and Ian too. Hope all is well with you. How is Ian doing? Zac just started classes last week. He says it's hard, but fun. He enjoys it. We're heading off to see him on the 24th of April. Can't wait.

Hope to talk to you soon.
Take care.
