I hope it is OK I joined this group. My son is a nuke and will report Jan. 10 to the USS Memphis. That group is not very active and I am just interested in the area and Groton in general. He is from South Mississippi (as far south as you can go with…

hi My Son is currently in Groton, Ct. for Submarine School then "A" School.

I would reccomend that IF you can go, then you should. My husband and I both went the first time my son went, but when we got there (70 miles away) we found out that "they" had made a mistake and his ship date was actually 3 weeks later. Therefore,…

There is a Logan's and Longhorn, but I don't even know where the closest Texas Roadhouse is. There was one in Hattiesburg (about 60 miles north) and one in Slideall, LA (about 60 miles west) but none around here. But there are plenty of good local r…

To your question about officer school - you have to complete prototype school. I am just a mom with no military experience other than just what I have gone thru with my son so this may not be 100% accurate. So here goes - once a year ( I think in Ma…

Are you driving or flying? There is a brand new Residence Inn near the airport, the Marriot mentioned in Brenda Sue's post is on the beach, there is a new Holiday Inn and all the other chains along Hwy 49. You will be about 5 miles from the base. Th…

Jane - So good to hear from you. Jeremy graduated prototype 12/4/09. It is evidently not a big ceremony. We did not go - he said their instructors had already given them their certificates so they just picked up their final orders and left. He and one of his roommates came home last Friday after graduation, stayed Friday night, left Saturday and drove to Houston and flew to Belize for a week with two other friends from Goose Creek. He got back to Houston last night and back here this morning early. Now - he is here until probably Jan, 5. He has to be in Groton CT on January 10 assigned to the USS Memphis a fast attack sub. It is one of the older ones and just got back in port on Nov.21 after 7 months out. Dont's have any idea when he will go going out again. I am sure he (and us) have a lot to learn. He is just glad to be done with school and moving on to using what he has learned. Where is Corbin living - Good luck to you. Let me hear back from you.

Oh My, I have been so bad at getting on this....but yes, I am still here. Corbin graduated Power School on Sept. 25, now in ProtoType, which I think he thought would be a bit of a relief, but seems way harder than he anticipated, but already almost half way thru it. His graduation was great, my mom and I went for a week and toured around SC - it was beautiful!! So in reading your posts, there is an oral exam at the end of this part? How intense is it - does your son say? Where is he going to be stationed? Corbin has requested Hawaii or Guam (nice vacation spots for us). All else is going well. Busy with a Freshman and one in middle school - I'm a perpetual taxi! I will be more diligent about getting on here..........have to run the girls to school. Thanks for the note - ill talk to you soon

Well, come on over then! Indeed, our little group of "Westies" has fun together. We're about 8 strong right now and would love to have you join us (your sister too)! We meet on third Mondays -- our dinners are always posted on the Events calendar in the right-hand column. Looking forward to meeting you! Hugs, k.

Hi, GC! Well, your adventure is just about to begin. It will be a bummer that son is stationed so far away, but will give you an excuse to visit New England in the autumn!
Be sure to join "Sub Moms;" we a nice bunch and all know the challenges of having a kid underwater. Hugs! k.

Thanks so much for the info. Very kind of you to take time out to address my concerns. My son turned 2o last April. He was floundering after high school and really wanted to go to University like his sister but he didn't apply himself enough in High school to get the scholarships like she did so we went to speak with a Navy recruiter who explained to him he could get his dream of going to school through serving. After scoring high on the ASVAB they guided him through to a decision on the Nuke program.
I am just hoping he does well. Seems like a long road. I am sure he will wake up one day and say the same thing your son did. "how did I get here?"
This is just the beginning but I tell him all the time "keep your chin up"
Thanks again for the info and Be well!

Hi Melody, You are right---there is no formal graduation ceremony for Prototype School. They do acknowledge the completion among themselves somehow---but it is nothing like the Power School graduation. Your son is going through what my son went through when he got there and was starting to get his sign-offs and qualifications done...the class ahead of them got priority. And so it goes I guess. He called us last week to say he passed the 100% test and is now awaiting oral boards later this month.
Glad to help with any questions---if I can answer them.

Hello--Thanks for answering. Our son does not know where he will be going yet. I guess that's all part of the orders. He has passed the 100% test (the final written test) and now awaits his oral boards----sometime in Oct. I just read today that Admiral Ted Branch will be assigned to Carrier Strike Group 1 ---which is the Carl Vinson--- and they will move to home port in San Diego. I'm hoping my son will get a west coast home port. It will only be about a month now until he has leave----I can hardly wait!

Hi Gulf Coast Mom, I ran across your post about Admiral Branch. If you check out my site you will see him in full uniform giving my son his diploma from Power School (Feb 09). He was the guest of honor and speaker at the graduation. I recognized him right away from the Carrier series---and I did chat with him a few minutes after the ceremony about it. Is your son just starting Power School or is he farther along? Mine is almost done with Prototype School. It's been a long journey.

Sorry it took a while to see the comment about bonuses. I know he's received part of his bonus, part after power, he'll get another part after prototype. He is still in proto and they were already asking him if he wanted to sign on for an additional 4 years, with another big bonus. He said he declined, since he has yet to set foot aboard his first assignment.
