Another thing my son on deployment has asked for is the packets to flavor water. I guess good tasting water is sometimes hard to find when not in United States.

Heather did call this evening. I was hoping I'd be available to answer when she called. Then since the call was so short I wished it would have been recorded so I could listen to it again. Oh well, she sounded good and that's what matters. Thanks for writing. Debbie

Michelle,
My son is an engineman. He is in BECC right now. He finishes on Wed (12/2). He's hoping to go straight into A school so he can be done by Christmas. We'll see how that goes it's the Navy after all. Lol. He's home for 2 weeks leave for the holidays. He's hoping to be able to go to the ship after leave instead of going back to GL. If he goes back to GL then he won't be home before reporting on board. Hope your son is able to make it home for part of the holidays. I know I will treasure JP being here because I know it will be a rare thing once he's out in the fleet. Hope your Thanksgiving was a great one. Brandy

Hi Michelle,
It has been awhile since I've visited this site. Jamell has been able to call us frequently. I'm so ready for him to get back to Norfolk!! I'm looking forward to the Christmas holidays and hoping he will be here. We haven't been able to spend the "actual" holidays together for the last 3 years. How is your son doing? Hope you've had a good school year. I've really enjoyed my students at UNT this year.
Take care,
Susan

Thank you Michelle! I would have never thought of those things. I thought he could only bring the cloths on his back and nothing else. I feel better knowing he can have a bible and a phone card. I'm sure i will be in touch.....

Hi Michelle! I'm in Stillwater. Nice to see someone so close to home. Where is your son stationed? My son, Nick, is leaving for boot camp in March. He is going into the Nuke program. I am nervous, proud, and excited all at the same time! Any advice?

I love Virginia Beach, too! What a nice holiday you had!!:) Jamell came home again in April prior to this deployment. It has been costing a fortune flying him back and forth. For some reason we are unable to get a military discount from Norfolk to Dallas.

I am a teacher, too! I've taught over 35 years, mostly K - 8th. I have my masters as a reading specialist and my doctorate focused on gifted and talented education. Right now I teach various teacher education courses, reading courses to undergrads and online GT courses to master's and doc students. I started teaching undergrad classes in the evening while I was teaching/working on my Ph.D. up in Colorado and ended up an assistant professor/undergrad faculty chair for Teacher Education Programs at Regis University in Denver. I loved it, but I quit to remarry an old high school boyfriend in 2002. (At that point, I had been divorced 5 years.) Jamell and I moved to Dallas. At first he was furious with me - it was the end of 9th grade - but later he ended up admitting he liked Texas! My daughter, her husband, and grandbaby (3 yrs. old) are still up in Denver. My husband had 2 daughters who were in college at the time. They now have graduated and ended up both working for Simon and Schuster in NYC. The younger one, Dinah, isn't too crazy about the cold weather and I think we may see her back in Texas soon (hopefully!). Our kids are 23, 24, 26, 27. Jamell is the youngest, his sister the oldest.

Sounds like you have a wonderful family! I don't know how you do it and teach 1st grade!!! Where do you teach? What part of Oklahoma do you live in? My ex-husband was from OKC. Jamell signed the papers so that he can reenlist, but has not officially done it yet. It would be for 2 years and he would have shore duty. I'm trying to stay out of the decision, but obviously I would prefer to have him at UNT or any other college. He would get more $$$ for his GI Bill if he reenlists for 2 years.

Jamell is an E-4 I believe. What is Cody's job and rank? We should get together sometime; sounds like we don't live too far apart!

I wonder if Cody and Jamell are on the same team? I've visited Jamell twice in Little Creek - once by myself and another time I brought my 89 year old dad. My husband has yet to see the base. My dad and I were able to see the USS Gunston Hall which Jamell was on during his first deployment.

A quartermaster assists with the ship's navigation. A beachmaster drives those trucks on and off the ship to the beach. That's about all I know. We were able to see all those craft when Jamell took us on a tour. Did you stay at the Navy Lodge? I've stayed there and another place on the base - can't recall the name. Both were very nice and very inexpensive.

The Honor Guard attends funerals. They carry the casket, fold the flag, etc. Jamell feels like a lot of the "work" he does is busy work. He felt like he was really helping with Honor Guard and doing something worthwhile. One time he shared that he forgot to salute when giving the widow the flag. He was soooo upset with himself!

I've been teaching a class at UNT this summer and one of my students had been in the Navy. He was a chef on the USS Ft. McHenry! He has been able to tell me a lot about the ship etc. He is using his benefit to pay for college. He is married and has twin daughters. He is extremely positive about his experience. He has been able to stretch the benefit to pay for 3 and 1/2 years at UNT, some of which he used for living expenses. The state of Texas will pick up his remaining tuition. (Only true if you enlist from Texas or Illinois.)

Wow, that is pretty quick to go on deployment... Is your son stationed in Norfolk, too. Actually Jamell is stationed in Little Creek. He is a quartermaster/beachmaster. Last year he spent 6 months on Navy Honor Guard which - amazingly - he really enjoyed.

What is this about the ship having an issue or the situation surrounding their departure? Do you know anything? Jamell never said a word...

Home port? Or another port? Was there a ship issue? Or was it the other thing? Alisa
