I'm very happy about my son joining the Navy. Never crossed my mind he would. I felt so extremely proud for him when I went recently to South Carolina for his Power School graduation. I know it did not come easy for the challenging academics and sticking to his goal and not giving up. He earned a ribbbon for volunteering and that was also a pleasant surprise. Now he has moved off base and has to adjust to sharing with roommates and paying bills and still stay dedicated to completing Prototype. He is safe, he has all he can eat in the galley, his friends are such nice young people, he spends his days in a beautiful college campus like base and he has to be disciplined to make it and if not, someone there to make sure he gets consequences. What I think he does not like is the heat, humidity and the rain but he has gotten used to it. I am looking forward to his going out on the sub.

Hi Miriam, Just happened to run across your post. My son is a Nuke also. He is in NY now at Prototype School. Was wondering where your son went to Prototype and is he finished yet? We attended NNPTC grad in Feb 09----enjoyed Charleston very much. It's been quite a journey.

Hi Miriam!
I just popped in to let you know that there is a Nuke Moms group. From what I understand, (a Chaplain stationed there left a comment on Nuke Moms), the boys will likely not be evacuating, they'll be restricted to their rooms if the winds hit 45 MPH.

Hi Miriam,
Tyler and Garron are both Electricians Mates. They are both Submarine Volunteers. I know Garron is trying to get that removed. He has thought about it and is not interested. Tyler is in Power school and he just classed up. Garron is in Phase 2 in A-School. How is Tomas doing? Did he enjoy himself this past weekend? Garron and Tyler had a great time much need ed for garron. He was so excited on Friday ..He had been nervous about some tests..But they turned out alright ..

You're welcome Miriam -- sorry for the late response- I haven't been on line much --- trying to enjoy the last bits of summer before the Fall arrives. I hope your son has settled in and is doing ok at GC. I have gotten a few phonecalls from Alex. He has moved up to Phase 2 which includes his ability to wear civilian clothes when he is off base - he was thrilled about that. He says school is intense and difficult, but he is making it ok. He leaves his room at 5:30 a.m. and doesn't get back until 9:00, and then he studies all night. I think he and some pals have made it off the base a couple of times to go into "town" and see a movie. I think they all chipped in for a taxi and traveled into town. It's good to know they get some down time so their heads don't explode ;0) My best to you and your family. Happy Labor Day!

Miriam,
Thakns for the info. I am in Great Lakes now with John. Diane and I were in Maryland and then New York. Been on the road for almost 2 weeks. We just got back from Chicago. They have to report back by 2050 (8:50). I am glad we came. The graduation was really nice. Post photos. John will be in GL for A School until March!!! So, he gets to experience the winter here! Which I hear is really cold!

Hi Miriam - congratulations on your son making it thru bc and getting to goose creek. Alex just PIR'd on 6/27 - he arrived in GC the following week. He was in limbo for about two weeks before he started A School. I don't think he did too much during that time - PT and Watch detail and a few inspections sprinkled in. I know that the base is nice. Alex says the quarters are a lot like a college dorm. The sailors are two to a room that has a microwave and a refrigerator. Those two share a bathroom with two sailors on the other side of the bathroom. Alex likes the base - but I think he had a tough time adjusting to being out of BC. It was such an intense time and he made some close friends in BC that he was suddenly separated from when he went to GC. I think he's adjusting though. I know once school starts, their free time is drastically reduced. I haven't heard much from him since he started. That's about all I know Miriam. I hope your son is doing well. He's in the nuke program I'm guessing. Do you know his rate now? Alex is an MM - Machinist's Mate.

Profile Information

About me:
6/08 I am a high school teacher and have two sons. I cried when I got "the box" and when I heard he had his wisdom teeth taken out. I missed his phone call during his fifth week of BC but left me a long message. At the beginning I was worried. Although I missed him, I knew he was hppy to be learning many different things and making friends from different parts of the country. He communicates more often with his girlfriend. He is has become mature, responsible and independent adult.
This forum has provided me with alot of information and I appreciate the moms who have shared what they know. I have also learned alot by asking other military mothers around. I have also searched the Navy sites for information. I enjoy seeing the families on the Navy For Moms pictures. I greatly enjoyed volunteering to work during Fleet Week in San Francisco in 2008. My son is in Nuke school in South Carolina currently.

Pass in review was an incredible experience. Parents and significant people in the sailors life: have no doubt, you should make every effort to attend because it is an important occasion. Achieving the goal is a difficult task and the young men and women deserve the recognition and the inspiration to continue to the next level.
5/09 It has been one year since my son went to boot Camp. Since then he has become dedicated to Nuke school. He studies like never before. He has also made new friends.
7/09 My son has graduated from Power School. it was a very proud moment since it did not come easy. he lives off base and his roommates are delightful young adults. I miss my son greatly but I am happy and proud of his being in the Navy. We are looking forward to his service in a sub.

When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was concerned or afraid
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
All the good things the Navy has to offer my son as a person. I have learned to trust that my son made the best decision for himself and now he is an adult. The feeling of inmense pride cannot be compared to anything else.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.
