Thanks Linda for inviting me into your friends list. I live in Cumberland, Md sure you already know that. I'm new to this my son is just starting his 2nd week. He leaves immediately after grad to go to A school in P-cola. So I aguess he won't be home until after A school. Long time...at least in A school he can call home more often. Teresa

Sorry Linda, I have not been on lately. Just got your message and I would love to meet up for lunch one day. We are leaving next Wed, 10/14 to go up to Connecticut for Sub school graduation and then he gets to come home for 2 weeks. Cannot wait. It will be at least 8 weeks before he leaves on his first deployment. Let me know how your trip goes, talk with you soon.

Hi Linda: Thought of more information you might like. When you go to the PIR they will be selling t-shirts for each division that is graduating. Each division has something to do with the design of the t-shirt.
Also if your driving it might be good to take a GPS with you so that you can find out about traffic. On the way up we did not use the toll road and we didn't sit in traffic, after we got to Great Lakes someone told Earl about the toll road, saying it would be quicker, and it would have been but there was an accident, and there was no way to get around it due to the construction, we sat behind the accident for about 2 hours. Also take dimes. Some tolls are 10 cent a mile with a toll booth every 2 or 3 miles.
After thinking there is also a "rain forest" themed resturant at Gurney Mall, they have snakes, spiders and such. They even have a petting zoo, if you want to call it that, so if Steven misses his creatures - let him go to the mall and hold them ucky spiders and lizards.
I do not know where Steven will be going to A School, but thinking towards the future you may want to prepare to send gifts to Steven. The US Postal Services has what is called a Military Pack. They will send you several boxes, tape, labels and packing slips (for going out of the country). Just call 1-800-610-8734, pick option #1, option #1, then option #2, and ask for the military pack, the first time you request it they will give you a customer number and each time that you call to get a new pack, you just use your customer number and they will send you new supplies.
I'm so excited for you.

Hi Linda, Glad to be friends. When we went last year to graduation we had really nice weather, cold but sunny. I cannot believe it has almost been a year. Micky graduates A school in 3 weeks and we will be heading to Connecticut and then I guess it's sub time. He will remain in Groton so that is not too bad and it really is pretty up there, just wouldn't want to be there in the winter. Way too much snow for me. Look forward to hearing how it goes and seeing the pictures. Have a great time and a safe trip.

Hey Linda, glad that you got to hear from your son. It does get easier. And then of course they head out to sea. Not looking forward to that. Mic got his orders yesterday and looks like he will be gone for the holidays this year. It is going to be hard all over again. Greenbelt is not that far, we should get together sometime and have lunch or something. Let me know. Would love to meet some friends. Take care and have a great weekend

Hi Linda, welcome to Navy for Moms. Congrats for hearing from Steven (saw on facebook). He must be doing good. If you haven't done so already, look and see if there is a group for his division and ship, if there isn't one, start one. I didn't get on this site until right before Nick graduated, but I learned alot from other Moms whose children were in Nicks division & ship. He was in a co-ed group and it seems that daughters give their mothers more information than sons. It was also nice to meet people at the PIR that I had been communicating with. Sometimes the groups set-up get togethers for the night before the PIR. It's so hard to be up at Great Lakes, and knowing that your child is behind some gate & you can't see them. They pretty much keep them within a 4 block radis of their barricks. If I can be of any assistance please feel free to leave me a message, or call me if you would like. Steven will do great in the Navy. Take care.

Hi Linda, welcome to Maryland Moms, I am glad to have you. What part of Maryland are you in. I am in La Plata (southern Maryland). I know what you are going through and I promise you it will get better. You should be hearing from your son soon, if you have not already. After about 3 weeks, I would get a phone call every weekend and then they just stopped. Found out that his group messed up one day and had all of their phone time taken away. Did not hear from him again until the weekend before graduation. Don't worry though, they do take care of them, he will be tired and they definitely go through extensive medical/dental treatments. You can go on youtube.com and look up basic training and they have videos that kinda give you an idea of what they go though up there. Will help you understand a little better anyway. Feel free to contact me anytime. Would love to hear from you. Have a good night.
