Did you go to Bennett College in Greensboro, NC? If so I went to Elon Univ. in Burlington, NC. In that case I'd recommend you to go Officer instead of Enlisted if possible, but that's a side note. About your post, I'm kind of in the same boat. My pa…

You still need to check with a recruiter as things do change.

Thank you so much! You just relieved me a great deal. I was worried the Navy would reject me because of food allergies. I'm happy to hear I can still join. I appreciate it!

I am allergic to chicken egg's and shellfish and have been in the Navy for over 12 years. It is fun underway sometimes as I am limited on what I can eat, and there are only 4 kinds of MRI's I can eat. You just need to learn to be very careful about…

Does anyone know if food allergies are a reason to be medically rejected from serving in the Navy? I'm allergic to honey, which isn't a problem as long as its not in the food i eat. Thanks! Cait

I'm also considering the Navy. I would say to keep a notebook with you at all times (or at least in your car or house). I would recommend that if you or he have any questions, write them down and ask the recruiter when you go to see him/her. If you…

About the picture of my son and husband, no it wasn't taken in New Orleans. It was taken September 2007 in San Diego when the USS Nimitz returned from deployment to the Persian Gulf. The Nimitz has never been stationed in New Orleans.

My daughter is home on leave right now and is happy to chat with you if you like. She has been in less than one year, but is very happy with her choice.

Hi Pelican,

First, I think you are such a mature, brave and savvy young woman to recognize the Navy's many benefits & opportunities.
Have you researched into applying to the OCS(Officer Candidate School) program? Its for men & women who have their bachelors degree and want to become Naval officers. Although I have heard that there is a wait period it might be worth it to go in already as an officer considering your longer range goals. Like some other moms have said here, your parents may not see you as being in the Navy but most parents come around in a short amount of time. However, if it is your intention to join the military regardless then you may want to have a sit down discussion with them to discuss how serious you are about pursuing this as part of your career path.

Do your best to explain to them why you wish to join and what it means to you. Most people, even those who aren't hippies, don't really have a clue to the breadth and depth of our military and that there are many, many facets to it. I won't say that at the end of the day the decision is all yours because you already know that. Best wishes on continued sucess and blessings to you

Ok for the book I'm talking about your recruiter should give it to you..it has 11 gen orders, terms of things you will need to know, ranks of all military, sailors creed...everything you need to know before you go to bootcamp...know that book front to back. I drill Douglas on it everyday...He thanked me at graduation. Yep 50 sit up/push ups..not sure how fast you have to run but I do know its' a mile and half. Douglas said bootcamp is not so scary if you know its their job to break you down..if you just do what your told and keep quite you will be just fine. So yes that's my sailor in the phone home on leave at christmas..he's 20 been in almost 2yrs. Were a Navy family, husband , his dad and dad. and grandparents before..all were Navy or some sort of Militart. Douglas graduated as a Jr and didn't know what he wanted to do except see the world. So now he's on his first deployment, seeing Europe and meeting so many people, he's have a wonderful time. He really enjoy's Navy life. He also wanted the GI bill so he could do college and also do college while on the ship, so the navy pays for the bulk of it. I love the Navy, I love that they are a family and I really don't have anything to say bad about it...there are people who have not had the success Douglas has had and are not so happy but I think alot (not all) but alot of it is frame of mind. Douglas said the hardest part of bc was staying awake when your just so tired., but the pride you feel when you end battle stations and they say take off your recruite hat and they give them their Navy hats is like nothing else...you EarNed it. Douglas is striking for Boatswains mate, its a hard hands on job, no one really wants that job but he has pride doing it and he really enjoys his division. There are some really fun video's on here of the sailors playing around on the ship...you should ck them out. I have a video of Graduation under my video then under fav's are some really funny navy ones..it shows the fun side of what goes on. Let me know if you need anything. I'm glad to help.
