Sallyforth, I am so glad to hear I am not the only one who gets that look and mumble when asked what my sailor is going to be doing!!
September 30
Hi, Sally--my daughter is an AT on the USS Boxer. She repairs cockpit components on Seahawk helicopters, Hueys, and Harrier jets. All sailors on ship have to learn ship duties--everyone takes turns doing things like painting, cleaning bathrooms, kit…

My son is an AT and is assigned to the US George Washington. It's his first cruise and he has been assigned to the Hasmat team.. He tells us he hangs out at the line shack every day after his 12 hour shift, for some on-job-training for AT. His bird…

Anwar is stationed in Lemoore, Ca. and is on the USS RR, for his first deployment. He started in the laundry room, which has been explained to me in great detail as not being unusual. However, he said he was bumped from his AT assignment by someone…

Here's an update; I finally heard from my son while he was on shore leave, and that was a blessed relief. Apparently he was bumped from his position as an AT by someone with a higher rank/paygrade/qualification. He's no longer in the laundry, but is…

My son is also new to the Reagan, he was previously on the Bush, and that would be cool if tey do have access to facebook, which is not a very trustworthy site. so I guess they monitor it very close. any news would be good to hear. I get emails, but…

Do you know if he is stationed in San Diego and on the Reagan or is he stationed in Lemoore, CA deployed on the Reagan, Whidbey Island, or ... ? If he is stationed in SD and the Reagan then he is ship's crew not with a squadron. An AT (or AE) can be…

Try again. I had to do it twice before it let me in. I also replied to the person who sent me the username and password and she reset me so it would work the second time I tried. Your son should be given an email address that ends in mil. They also…

My son is also deployed on the USS Stennis, but his first three months were working in the galley. He called it TAD (temporary assigned duty). After the three months is was working with his squadron and obtaining his flight deck quals.

Hey Sally, deployment is tough on us, but tougher on our sailors. My daughter deployed 1st time on Stennis, and didn't have all her quals, she too had laundry duty, and spent every free moment when not on laundry in the shop getting her quals. You c…

Sallyforth, is your son with a squadron? If so, which one?

Profile Information

About me:
I am a single mom watching my only child being deployed for the first time. I am anxious to say the least, but very proud of him. My son Anwar (27), has been in the navy since Feb., 2008, and finally shipped out aboard the USS Ronald Reagan. He's an AT. One of the things he said to me after boarding, was that he felt 'humbled.' Not something I'd expected. Usually it's the 'I'm proud to be an American' thing that you hear. But to be humbled implies a sense of awe at the majesty, and power of America; and that in its' self, instills pride. I think my baby has matured. Nevertheless, I told him to stay away from the edge. Oh well, I'm a mother first.
I am here to support or represent my:

Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?

When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud and encouraged it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
I've had 26 years to shape and mold him; the navy has polished and refined him. I'm pleased with the results.'
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

Glad to hear you heard from your son. I wish I would have joined the Navy when I was young. Can you imagine getting to go to these places? Actually, when I was young I would have been too chicken to get off the boat. I've been emailing with my son just about every day. He works on planes so if they aren't broken he is kind of bored. I'm on the West coast so when he's working nights I'm up. Are you planning on the tiger cruise? My son told me today that the Skipper finally made an announcement that their schedule is under review and they may cancel the tiger cruise and their last port call but you didn't hear it from me!

Hi Sally,

I noticed one of your post in an emptynest forum and wanted to say Hi. I'm also about to be an emptynester myself. My oldest, a daughter, is my Sailor and my youngest, a son, is headed off to college in another part of the country. Feel free to write, Sherry

Welcome Sallyforth! I see you are from Philadelphia. I am right in Cherry Hill, NJ!!! If you ever want to get together or have questions or whatever please give me a call! Where if Philadelphia are you? I can personal message my info if you like. I so know where you are right now with this whole deployment thing cause I was there too last time! It was a bad scene!!! I am still not loving it, but knew what to expect this time and it was easier. You will get the hang of it too. My RR son is my baby too, which didn't make it easier not that it will be any different when it's his brother, but the baby first was crushing!!!

Hello! I saw your message to the group asking what an AT is. Here is what I found online ... hope it helps:

AAviation electronics technicians (ATs) repair some of the most advanced electronics systems in the world. Repair jobs can range from flight deck trouble-shooting of the electronic weapons system on an F-14 Tomcat aircraft to changing computer circuit cards in an air-conditioned shop. These technicians may also volunteer to fly as Naval aircrew. Aircrew perform numerous in-flight duties and operate radar and weapon systems in turbojet, helicopter, or propeller aircraft.
