Mine just left for a 6 month deployment, but it won't necessarily be 6 months in one place.

My son has emailed me twice from Japan. We are trying to use Skype also, but so far he hasn't had the opportunity. Flyboymom, my son also had to get a medical waiver, but it all has worked out. You are so right about we moms having to learn that we…

I've been off for a few days. It's fun to catch up with everyone's adventures. My son is now in the Land of the Rising Sun. His wife arrived here in St. Louis at noon, just ahead of the weather. I hope to hear more from both of them tomorrow.

OK-I'm really sincere in this question. How do you pack a birthday cake so that it arrives in good condition?

I just talked and "saw" Stephen and Angela on a Skype call. It was so much fun. Does anyone here know much about Skype? I'm kind of feeling my way. I told them that when Stephen's dad was in Nam, he called me on Christmas. Every other communication…

My son is leaving for his first deployment tomorrow. He's headed to Japan. I can hear the tension in his voice, but I know he's well prepared, and it's another step for all of us.

Hi Sandy, I will be shouting it all over Naval Aviation if and when he gets P3s. He selects on Tues and should know a day or two after that. So by the end of this week. Thanks . Did your son go to Jacksonville for the RAG and then to Hawaii? Wow, Japan. What's going on in Japan that we need to be there?

Sandy,

There is some new housing on base at Kaneohe.
Ben and Colleen just moved into a new house--4 bedrooms and 3 baths. They love it; the only thing they miss is the fenced badk yard they did have for the dogs.

Hi, Sandy. I was reading that your son is headed to Hawaii. Mine is currently still at JAX, but he did request Hawaii as his first choice for duty station. Not to say he will get it, but I am already feeling your pain.

Good luck!

Sandy,

My son Ben is an 06 grad from the Naval Academy and currently an LTJG. He is an NFO on P-3's and is part of Patron Squadron 4"Skinny Dragons." He and his wife live on base at Kaneohe. They are very, very pleased living there. We visited HI and stayed with them for 10 days last Oct. before Ben's deployment to Iraq. We had a marvelous time, and we thought the base just great. We were so impressed with the sense of community among the families there, and, indeed, while Ben was gone, friends/neighbors were very supportive to our daughter-in-law Colleen. Ben got back 31 May and is VERY happy to be out of Iraq. They will be in Kaneohe another 2 years (they have been there about a year). Ben will probably have another deployment before that time is up. They moved from NAS JAX, and the movers did a great job of moving their belongings, but Ben and Colleen arrived before their stuff did, but no worries, the base has furniture etc. to borrow. There is a beach on base that we could get to from Ben's house by walking to the side of the golf course. There is a nice exchange/ commissary, but if they want to shop at the bigger stores at Pearl, they have to go into Honolulu, which is not too bad at all. Of course, there are LOTS of fun places to go. We liked the North Shore a lot. But if we didn't get to do anything but stay on base and hang out nearby, Lanaki (sp?) beach is one of the most beautiful I've seen! Best wishes.

Sandi,, i totally understand that you were too busy to fit anything else into your schedule. Glad you had a good time and that your son has achieved a major accomplishment. Did you say "re-engaged"? Congrats to them. Please tell us all about the ceremony. Yes, Conor still wants to fly P3s. I love the idea of a large crew, 11 guys and gals supporting each other instead of flying alone in a jet. I'm sure it is all good, though. Congratulations!!!!
