Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Enlisted
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was concerned or afraid, Was proud, Encouraged him/her
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
Be patient, and let them grow and learn to be an independent thinking person, if they aren't already. Pray for them and their fellow military members. They are all fighting for us all.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
Our relationship has grown stronger, The Navy has a lot to offer, This was the best decision he/she could have made

Dear Sharon ,
How have been? It has been awhile. I'm doing good. The ship did pass. Kim came home for three days. Those God byes are still hard though! UGH!

This week was her birthday, she turned 21. We called her up and sang Happy Birthday to her voice mail! HAHA! She called a few minutes later. Her friends took her to a bar, I really didn't need to know that! UGH!
Good for Shawn, I wish him all the best. You said he travels to funerals. I was at a Navy Military funeral in July, in New Jersey. I wonder if he was there.

Not much going on here. I'm just so glad the summer is over. I enjoy these lower temperatures of 40s - '50's. I feel like I can breathe again! HAHA!

Can you beleive that Chriatmas trees are out already. I hate when the holidays are rushed.
Let me get going. Please stay in touch.
Take care and God bless,
Your friend,
Barbara

Hey Sharon,
The guardsmen graduating at the end of the month were NEW guardsmen. It is a whole new family of Moms and guards now, though some of us originals to the forum are still there for about one more year to go. :-). I haven't heard of anything special coming up before December, except that they are getting a new CO on September 25th.

Take care. Carole

Dear Sharon,
Boy it's been awhile, how have you been?
That's great you did send time with Shawn. How's he doing?

I'm doing good, other then the summer heat! HAHA! I keep asking if it's Fall yet! HAHA!

Kim's ship finally has pulled out, but test runs like 5 days at a time. Thank God they did, the first time out, there was 4 fires aboard. Imagine if they were really out to sea!

The ship just recently had a major inspection. Kim said maybe tomorrow she'll find out if the ship passed or not. If it did, the Sailors can come home for a few days. They have been working 15 hour days for 7 days straight for weeks now, just for this inspection.

There is talk of deployment to Afghanistan next year. Perfect vocation spot! UGH! Not exactly what I had in mind!!

Shawn has a lot of great things coming up, over the months, that's great! I wish him the best in Sea Bee school.

You wrote that he does funerals, how did he get that honor! UGH!
I just recently went to a military funeral, so sad, a young man. He was hit in the head, and died 4 days later. I met the young Sailor once, when we were on a parade together, real nice young man.

My older daughter just came back from Virginia, she spent time with Kim.
Now she wants to go back in October. After seeing all the brochures, Virginia looks like it's strictly for beach lovers.

That's about it all my excitemnt, nothing really new.
It was great hearing from you. Don't be a stranger.
Take care and God bless,
Barbara

Hey Sharon,
I finally can reply back to you. Last time I tried my keyboard froze up and then I couldn't get back on the website. Crazy!

Anyway, glad to hear you had a great time in DC and got to see Shawn and what he does. I'm looking forward so seeing Jan at work later this year too. Jan also attended a family reunion, one that happened in Maryland which I couldn't attend. He really enjoyed it.
So I didn't know they had a Seabee training place in Mississippi. So cool that he will be near you! Jan will stay in the guard for another year and then I think he plans on being a quartermaster. He likes navigation and being out to sea. I feel a bit worried about that, but I will support whatever he wants to do.
Talk to you soon,
Carole

Hi Sharon, What great news about Shawn. A Certified Drill Instructor!! Congratulations to him! I know you both must be so proud! Oh yes of course the main attraction would be Shawn. LOL! And sightseeing is what you do when you can't see him.

Jan is doing ok too. He is taking a trip in May to visit his girlfriends family in Michigan and then in September he plans to be here in California bringing his girlfriend with him. I have to figure out what sleeping arrangements to make for her. I live in a small apartment, but I'll figure it out.

I have no idea what they will do for Memorial Day, I'm guessing it will have something to do with the tomb of the unknown though. I'll have to search for photos online as usual. LOL! Talk to you soon and let me know how your trip goes.
Blessings, Carole

Dear Sharon,
How have you been? It's been awhile, I'm doing good and the family too.

That's great news that you'll be visiting Shawn on Memorial weekend. I'm so happy for you. I hope the nice weather goes with you.

I wish Shawn all the best, what ever he gets assigned! HAHA!! With the Navy, they constantly change their minds! UGH!

Kim is still docked. She was crossed trained for all the ship's jobs, that's good to hear. The ship was supposed to pull out next month, for a week, but plans were changed!! So we don't know when yet.

She bought a car, and has driven up three times already. My hearts in my throat every time she does . It's a 7 hour car ride, and she always gets lost, taking her 11 hours!

Let me get going. SO good to hear from you again. Please don't be a stranger.
Take care and God bless,
Barbara

Hi Sharon, Oh MY I'm so sorry I didn't get right back to you. Jan is fine and getting over a bad cold. I think it has been a little hard on him being in the cold for so long. It is certainly not something he is familiar with. I like to kid him about it by telling him how warm it is in So. Cal. hehehe.

If you contact the command and tell them when you will be there, then perhaps you'll be able to get some Shawn-time for your family. I know what you mean to be able to go someplace where you know your Dad was at during his stint in the military. When my dad in the service he was a SeaBee and stationed at a base called Pt. Hueneme which is right down the coast from me. My brother sent me a copy of one of his letters to my mom where he says he came to Santa Monica with a friend and got harassed by the police. I live in Santa Monica and that really makes me laugh.

Anyway, about sightseeing in DC. I can't say that I'd be the best person to ask. I would certainly suggest you see the Smithsonian and I always liked the NASA museum where you can see the Wright Brother's Kitty Hawk and the National Museum of Art. If you want to go to the top of the Washington Monument, you have to go early because they get a really big line as the day wears on. When I was a kid, you could walk up the stairs, but they don't allow that anymore. One place that is beautiful and that a lot of people may not think of going to is the Arboretum. If you like plants, flowers and trees, that is a fabulous place to go. It is on Bladensburg Road. They have a wonderful Bonsai collection and some architectural columns left over from a historical site in DC (can't remember what one). The Arboretum is across the street from Mt Olivet Cemetery which is very old and has a lot of beautiful cemetery sculpture from 200-150 years ago. Mary Surratt is buried there. She was the lady who was hung for being involved in Lincoln's assassination. I think she was the first woman ever convicted and executed in the US. It was very controversial (and still is) because many people doubted she really had anything to do with it. If you go see her grave, turn around and look at the empty field across from her and you'll be looking at my g.g.g.grandmother's gravesite which my family is saving up to get a monument put on.

I'll talk to you soon!
Carole

Anyway, that is all I can think of.

Dear Sharon,
Tattoos are nice, but some people don't know when to stop!! I have one tattoo, it's on my left ankle, of a three flower vine with a butterfly on top.
I would like to get one more.
I was thinking of having a small one, of my reptile, the one in my picture, on my right ankle. My girlfriend said for a woman, it's too tacky, a lizard. So, I don't know, but I would still like one more.

My son has 6 tattoos, since last November!

So, how are you doing today? I was so bored out of my mind.! My husband hogs the computer all day, so I was stuck wathing movies. I feel alseep, I was so bored. My older daughter went out to the shopping mall, you'd think to ask me if I' be interested in joining her, of course not.!

Let me get going.
Take care and God bless,
Barbara

Dear Sharon,
How have you been....besides busy! HAHA!! That's good though, can't say your bored! HAHA!
This is my first night back in three days. The computer motem died on me! UGH! It's good to be back!

Thta's wonderful about you seeing Shawn for memorial weekend.
Kim was here for 6 days. She surprised us last Friday. Driving back, she always gets so lost. It took her 12 hours to drive back on a 7 hour trip.! My heart is always in my throat when she does that drive.
She's doing well. She got another tattoo when she was home. I hope she doesn't get into trouble for it. She didn't ask for permission and it's three huge stars on her wrist. Well, if she does, it's her own fault!

My temperatures have been in the upper 40's. I'm not a summer person, so that's fine with me!! HAAH!

Let me cut this short. I'm afraid to even see how backlogged I am!
You take care and God bless. SO good to hear from you again.
Barbara
