You're welcome, Janet! I started this discussion topic, because there are so many new NFM's with sailors going to DLI all the time. I figured that posting the links that I and other DLI moms had found helpful in one convenient place, would save some…

Profile Information

About me:
I grew up in Pennsylvania, and moved to Arizona after graduating from Penn State with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing & Psychology. I am married and working as a RN. My son, Jason, joined the Navy in July of 2006, completed his "CTI" training at the Monterey "Defense Language Institute" and has his Associates Degree in "Arabic". He is now stationed at Fort Gordon in Georgia and was just awarded "Sailor of the Year" in Dec 2008 for his accomplishments in his job class, volunteer work and tutoring! Needless to say, I am very proud of him!

More recent good news! Jason celebrated his 21st birthday in May, got engaged in June to a wonderful girl he met in Georgia and got married to her just recently. He has just completed his 3rd year in the Navy & has 3 more to go!!
I am here to support or represent my:
Jason
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Enlisted, An officer
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was concerned or afraid, Needed to learn more about it, Was proud
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
Letting Go!! It was very difficult for me when he first went to Basic Training and I couldn't contact him for several weeks. After that, it was difficult not having him around for the first year or so, because he was my only child, and I had to learn to deal with the "Empty Nest" thing. I still miss seeing him as often as I would like, but we try to visit with him as often as his schedule allows. When he first joined the Navy and left, I also joined another online support group for Navy Moms which really helped out a lot (In fact through my contacts on NavyMoms.com we started a group dinner get-together for the families of our New Sailors graduating from Basic at Great Lakes.)
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
Our relationship has grown stronger, This was a maturing experience, The Navy has a lot to offer, This was the best decision he/she could have made

It's Official!! My sailor son, Jason got married yesterday to a lovely girl, Olivia! They had the ceremony in a romantic beach location at sunset near Savannah, GA. He has another 3 years in the Navy, so they will continue to reside near his permanent base in GA. Congrats to the Newlyweds...may they have a lifetime of happiness together! I am so happy for both of them & excited to have such a wonderful daughter-in-law!

Thanks Sue! Jason is doing well, should be off medical leave this coming week and able to get back to work. Surgery and all aside, I think it was a good thing for him to rest up and have some down time. Usually when he gets leave and comes home, he's always so busy running around, trying to see all his friends and family, that he doesn't get much down time. I'm looking forward though to seeing him again right after Xmas. Sharon

Jason made it through surgery okay and is resting for now. I finally got a little sleep in as well once I knew he was out of OR & recovery. If all goes well he should be out later tomorrow or Saturday. I got a really nice call from the Duty Officer in charge while he was in surgery to let me know what was going on and that he would keep tabs on him while he was there--that made me feel much better during the time I was out of touch with Jason and it's nice to know they take care of each other like that when their own family can't be there! Hi Navy moms, I'm up late surfing the web and just checking in. My son, Jason is in the hospital right now at Fort Gordon, with appendicitis, luckily he got in before it ruptured! I'm trying to bide my time while I wait to hear about his surgery. If you're checking out my page or leaving a comment, please take some time to say a few prayers for him! I hate having to wait by the phone and not being close enough to go see him when he's ill. That's probably the hardest part of being a military mom. Thanks! Sharon

HI
He does go out on missions - often. Probably shouldnt say much else about that. They are used to him being gone - he was gone more often when they were in San Diego and he was in a different job.

Sharon: I'm really sorry you won't be able to make the potluck....watch the Az site for other events. Maybe we'll be able to meet sometime soon. Actually I'm in a lot of the west side hospitals as the RN Liaison for my company...so maybe we'll even run into each other at work! Julie
